So, is this the downfall of Couric?
Edited on Mon Mar-26-07 12:50 AM by Superman Returns
The CBS website is flooded with numerous anti-Couric statements, many from first time internet posters outraged at her questioning of the Edwardses. There are literally pages fully of angry remarks against Couric's interview and her tone. Even Drudge is picking up on the story and using it as his top headline. Seems like she stired up a lot of angry sentiment this time. Is the end of Katie Couric???

1. I thnk she wanted to appear tough and serious.....
...but she came off as badgering. I wonder if was her or the editing? Did they cut out the less intense parts and give us a string of her 'tough' questions?

When she needs to be a caring journalist...she acts like a pitbull on crack.

She needs to go. She has no fuckin clue on how to behave.

38. it's called using a "blind quote"
and indicates shoddy journalism, to say the least!

If Couric is exhibit A, exibit B was Meredith V. on the Today show interviewing the Kerrys. TV journalism is getting worse and worse. It's all about them and never about the people they are interviewing.

31. Compare Katie's cheesycat smiling interview with Condi to this interview
I find Couric pretty unwatchable, but withstood the interview to see how she would frame her questions. And of course, there was just so many pathetic side swipes at John and Elizabeth Edwards that it's hardly worth counting.

I do remember her soft focus softball interview with Condi Rice a while back...and it was equally pathetic in terms of being so predictably "sweet" and unquestioning of real issues and ended with her naming her favorite R&B tunes she loves to work out to. Or whatever...it was just bad.

I wanted John and Elizabeth Edwards to get up at one point, throw water at Kouris and walk off the set. Better yet, John should have asked why she didn't quit her job when her husband was dying of colon cancer...slap back..."

8. She would be fine on Entertainment Tonight.
But she's UNQUALIFIED for any news program.

She's not a journalist. She's a "television personality".

Is it the end? It sure doesn't help. Along with her low ratings for the Evening News, I think this interview shows Katie's career is circling the drain.

I just don't like Couric! No matter what she calls herself, she is NOT a real news journalist!

I saw her on Colbert's show last week and instead of actually talking about the news, she talked about trivial stuff during the entire interview! I finally got fed up and changed the channel.......

A real news person would have talked about real issues instead of spending all of their time on stupid stuff like that!

Isn't this the same woman who advertised her colonoscopy on the Today Show because of her husband's death and gave us a view of Katie that I would sooner forget?

She is desparate to get ratings and in the process is willing badger the Edwards'.

It is only a matter of time before she will be history.

49. Here are the latest...100% negative. Last night I read almost
almost all of 10 pages, which were 99.9% negative towards Katie. Copied below is page 43(?) ...

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/24/60minutes/main2605038.shtml

Well, there's not much to add to what everyone else has already stated. The interview was pathetic. Katie Couric obviously has her own agenda, and being human or professional or competent is not part of it. Neither, apparently is rosgrove based on the first comment above. Who is rosgrove to tell the Edwards what or how they should deal with her cancer?

"some people would say"-that 60 min has reached an unbelievable low point by propagandizing this families attempt at holding on to something positive while battling this new obstacle in their lives. Foreshame cbs, foreshame.
You've lost yet another viewer.

Katie Couric no wonder NBC let you go. Your treatment of the Edwards was more than cruel.
It was obvious to viewers you are a very cold
hearted and two-faced person. If I had been Mrs. Edwards.....I would have came right back at you regarding the death of your husband. You certainly did not stop your career. You didn't
stop to take care of your family. You really fell from grace on this one Katie. I too use to be a fan of yours but this one took the cake.
I will no longer trust you as a reporter because it is clear you have an Republican objective on every topic before you.
CBS...your loosing me. Is this the best (Couric) you can do? If so, I am afraid that my 45 years as a loyal viewer will now be better served by some other station.

I have no idea how i'll vote in 2008; i do know that i believe the Edwards truly want to better this ole world. i applaud their tenacity at this evil cancer and wish them and their family the very best - they truly have a tough road ahead of them. now as far as katie couric, i truly liked her and enjoyed her each morning on the today show; what the hello has happened to her? she's too serious and ruthless. just to get an in depth story, i think she crossed the line with some of the questions she asked john & elizabeth. what happened to the cute, perky girl whom was so devastated when jay died of cancer? out of sight, out of mind? she's turned into a pit bull with lipstick. very disappointed in her

Katie Couric was insensitive to the point of being cringe-inducing. In her effort to be hard-hitting, I suppose, she was incredibly rude to a couple who had just received shattering news. Who is she, or anyone for that matter, to judge them?

"Some people are saying" that Catie Couric is a Republican plant... "I am hearing" that Catie has neglected her children, by pursuing her career after her husband's tragic and untimely death due to colon cancer. "Some people wonder" why anyone would trust a corporate media complex whose profits, tax-breaks, and broadcast band access are tied to a corrupt and incompetent GW Bush administration.
I wonder why anyone would continue to watch Catie Couric or trust the corporate media complex. I certainly won't and don't.
I am anxious to see how 'tough' Catie is when she interviews Republican candidates on their second or third marriage, and in some cases estranged from their own children?... "Newt, how could you divorce your first wife (of three) when she was struglling with cancer?" have always had great admiration for Elizabeth Edwards. My admiration is even higher today than it was yesterday after reading how both she and John handled Katie's questions. Elizabeth is an exceptionally strong person who is looking forward rather than simply taking the cancer as a death sentence. She could easily curl into a ball and ignore the rest of the world while the cancer takes over but rather she's out with her husband trying to change the world. These times won't be easy but she is charging forward. It's very clear looking at Elizabeth and John that they love each other and their decisions don't come lightly.

As for Katie, I agree with the vast majority of you. One would think she'd be more sympathetic given her husband had died of cancer but she's very hard-hearted towards the Edwards'. Could it simply be jealousy in regards to how the Edwards are handling their situation? Perhaps she didn't have the courage John has or Elizabeth is more optomist than Katie's husband was. It could be argued Katie was being the devil's advocate but clearly, she was just trying provoke either into an outburst, I believe.

52. I really don't see what the big deal is, I'm getting sick of certain questions being off-topic
besides, some of her questioning gave John Edwards and his wife the ability to shine even brighter. I thought they handled everything about as well as possible. They were amazing last night!

69. Here are some recent ones. See also post #49. Link below.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/24/60minutes/main2605038.shtml

I watched last night's interview in total disbelief. I cringed at every word that came out of Katie Couric's mouth. What is wrong with her, that she could be so rude & insensitive? How could the 60 Minutes producers air that piece? CBS & Ms Couric owe John & Elizabeth Edwards an apology. I couldn't help but think what a better job Leslie Stahl would have done with that interview

Katie Couric's interview with John and Elizabeth Edwards was one of the worst segments I have EVER seen on television. She made me cringe each time she opened her mouth. I have always been a loyal 60 Minutes watcher, but now I think I would much prefer to watch Dateline round up child molesters, rather than see Ms. Couric in GOP action again. She reminded me last night of Ann Coulter and Laura Ingram rolled up in one. CBS, you should be ashamed of yourself for believing that she is helping your network.

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. NEVER HAVE I SEEN SUCH AN UGLY INTERVIEW. YOU WERE TALKING TO TWO LOVELY AND CLASSY FOLKS AS IF THEY WERE SUSPECTED OF SOME HEINOUS CRIME. THEY ARE GOING AHEAD AND LIVING THEIR LIVES IN A POSITIVE AND USEFUL WAY AND YOU JUST DRILLED THEM. YOU NEVER DID GET THE ANWERS YOU WANTED.
THEY WERE HONEST AND STAIGHT FORWARD WITH THEIR CONVERSATION WITH YOU AND YOU JUST WOULD NOT STOP. SHAME SHAME I AM JUST DISGUSTED BEYOND WORDS. MAM I AM 82 YEARS OLD AND WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY HORROR WITH THAT INTERVIEW. YOU HURT YOURSELF BADLY. NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT

I am sick to death of Katie Couric. Most times she is just plain rude as she seems to think this makes her a tough newswoman. She has alot to learn.
Many of her questions offenened me, but I think to say to a couple who is dealing with these life and death issues, many people think your using this to get votes. What is wrong with this woman? Why CBS thinks she's wonderful is beyond me. Even if some uneducated people wou;d think this, for her to say it to them is incredulous.
But then again we all know how biased and totally out of touch she is.
Couric's interrogation of the Edwardses virtually stank with self-righteousness and hypocrisy. Did she quit her job when her husband was sick with cancer? Would she have told her sick husband to cease doing that for which he had a passion and to turn his back on all that was important to her once he found out he was sick? Would her late husband have insisted that she leave behind the possibility of a broadcasting career in order to stay at home with him? I like John Edwards but probably won't vote for him. If I do, it will be based on the issues, not on how he and his spouse decided to deal with her illness. Whether or not I choose him, Clinton, or Obama, I am proud of both John and Elizabeth and all the ways that they have dealt with life's difficulties. Shame on you, Couric.

I was so shocked and angry regarding Katie Couric's interview with Elizabeth and John Edwards. How dare you ask Elizabeth "How do you feel that now you are facing death?" How insensitive is that? What message did you send to all Metastatic Breast Cancer women in this country? And then to ask John Edwards "Do you think this will affect your campaign for the Presidency?" Who is preparing these insensitive questions? As a woman who was diagnosed 4 years ago with Metastatic Inflammatory Breast Cancer and has had successful treatments, no one has ever been so insensitive with their questions and comments as Katie Couric and CBS News. SHAME ON YOU ALL. You Should bow your heads and apologize to all the beautiful women fighting this chronic but treatable disease. My best to Elizabeth and John Edwards.

Couric came across as staggeringly insensitive and even hostile. This was all the more remarkable since her own husband died of cancer. I don't recall her stopping work to care for him. Yet she appeared to imply this was a heartless choice on the part of John Edwards. It was a mystifying performance.
