Leahy Knocks Cheney: "I Don't Need Any Lectures From Him"

February 11, 2009 11:39 AM

Senator Patrick Leahy and Dick Cheney have a legendarily icy relationship, one that crested with the former Vice President telling the Judiciary Committee Chairman "go fuck yourself" on the Senate floor.

................

In an interview with Leahy last night, I asked him about the former V.P.'s latest, cryptic assertion that the Obama administration was making it easier for terrorists to successfully attack the United States. The senior Senator from Vermont didn't disappoint.

"I just want to say here Bush and Cheney were in charge when the last attack happened," Leahy said. "They were warned about the last attack before it happened. On September 10th their proposal was to cut our counter-terrorism budget substantially. I don't need any lectures from him. They screwed up badly.

"They are also the same people who said the war in Iraq would be over in a couple weeks, shock and awe and we would find the weapons of mass destruction. Their policy was to let Osama bin Laden get away when we had him cornered and send the troops into a useless war in Iraq. No, no, I don't think he has a great deal of credibility."

Hell, my Schipperke with the cone on her head who is blind in one eye could replace Harry Reid and do a better job.

We need someone as Senate Majority Leader who is significantly more aggressive than Harry Reid.

4. The August 6th, 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing Document
Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 10:48 AM by Ian David
APRIL 10--Under pressure from the September 11 commission, the White House today declassified and released an intelligence digest given to President George W. Bush weeks before the 2001 terrorist attacks. The confidential President's Daily Brief (PDB) for August 6, 2001 contained a two-page section entitled "Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in US," and refers to possible hijacking attempts by Osama bin Laden disciples and the existence of about 70 FBI investigations into alleged al-Qaeda cells operating within the United States. The August 6 PDB, an excerpt from which you'll find below, was presented to Bush while he vacationed at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. The digest is prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency, an official from which briefs the president on the report's contents. While Bush critics have described the August 6 PDB as a warning of an impending al-Qaeda attack, Condoleezza Rice, Bush's national security adviser, testified Thursday that the document contained "historical information based on old reporting. There was no new threat information." (2 pages)

6. This does contain " new information",
the last two paragraphs indicate a HIGH level of probability
that another attack will occur, hijacking aircraft, within the
US.

And they did NOTHING!

31. These are fightin' words, Sen. Leahy, but.......
just as Cheney will never apologize for the outrageous words he spoke to you, a truth & reconciliation commission will not cut it. Cheney is a shameless liar. It's all he knows, and he will continue to lie for the remainder of his hopefully short life.

But guess his back is feeling much better, huh?

5. I've found another way to piss conservatives off with their latest nonsense
I've been told on several occasions by the fake patriots that "at least bush kept us safe." To wit I have responded, "almost as safe as Clinton did."

"bush kept us safe" is their response to economic ruin and now there is such great conservative concern about federal spending. limbaugh is right, they all are comedians.

10. Cheney needs to someday express his regret for his remarks to Senator Leahy.
I doubt Cheney will ever have a clue.

Republicans need to learn there are some who take their oath of office seriously. I am of the opinion that Roberts failure at the inauguration was on purpose. It appears that Senator Leahy and President Obama are sincere in their oath.

12. Anytime I hear a Rethug talk about how heroic BushCo was for not letting it happen AGAIN
I remind them that another way to look at it is that Bush was the Commander in Chief for the single most lethal attack on American soil in the continental US in our country's history. Why should I be so proud that it didn't happen twice?

Isn't that the same as looking at my Bush-era 401K like it's half full rather than half empty?

They did exactly what they needed to do to become war presidents; even a 2-term president which seemed extremely unlikely pre-9/11. With high approval ratings, they plundered and pillaged per plan. Their "execution" was flawless.

Then he curtails American's freedoms, again, giving bin laden what he wanted, lowers our standing in the world further appeasing bin laden. spys on americans, lets bin laden remain free...etc..:banghead:

The plan was no less than a heist on the US Treasury.
It wasn't foreign terrorist doing what they do best, it was an organized for-profit 'hit' on this Nation.

was largely consumed by pathologically greedy Republicans foaming at the mouth over the tax cuts they were going to give themselves. You put single-minded Republicans in a position like that and they are not likely to notice a tornado passing overhead.

And then 9/11 interrupted their orgy.

34. HEY! Listen up,
Al Gore proposed reinforcing cabin doors for airliners way before 9/11. It was to protect the pilots from just such an attack. I remember Limbaugh and other Reich Wing talking heads making fun of Vice President Gore at the time. They cited a cost figure that would cause "hardship" to the airlines. I believe the cost cited was $300 per plane. If adopted Gore's proposals would have prevented the attacks. Can someone find information on this? I'm not a skillful searcher.
