Today is the 200th birthday of one of our greatest presidents. Now I know he was a Republican but the current GOP, in my view, has no right to claim him. His values were far removed from what the current Republican party believes in. Truth is, if they were alive during his time, it'd have been likely that they'd have been fighting against him.
And while true that he did not initially make any attempt to free the slaves, he eventually had an epiphany, realizing that slavery had to be abolished. Part of that was pressure from England and France but part of that was also a realization that the old America (which oppressed African Americans) could not come back. It would be well over a hundred years before the black community gained fully the rights that were promised but nevertheless, I contend that the most important step of all was the realization that slavery was an abomination. That was the step which started their journey to achieve betterment and equal respect. And today, we may celebrate the fruits of their labor with the first African American president.
So cheers to Abraham Lincoln; the president who made the right choice. K&R if you agree with me in that Lincoln should get the credit he deserves!
