3. “Some of my verbal conduct was wrong."
In 1991, Williams was disciplined by the Washington Post after several female employees at the paper claimed he directed “sexually explicit and hostile comments” towards them.<2> Williams’ letter of apology read, in part: “Some of my verbal conduct was wrong. I now know that, and I extend my sincerest apology to those whom I offended.”

Somebody wrote this at thinkprogress:

Hey for everybody who was outraged at what Juan Williams said please go over to NPR and have your voice heard. It took me less than 2 minutes to sign up for their site and comment. The reason for my request is to my surprise many of the comments over there are supportive of Williams AND FauxNooz. It seems NPR is either attracting a lot of wingnuts now or the fix is in and Williams/FoxNews are sending commenters over there to support him and make it seem like its no big deal. So like I said if you want NPR to get a handle on how the public really feels about Juan Williams take two minutes out and go tell them how you really feel. Thanks.

Juan Williams is an Ass. I think the we should tell NPR how we feel.

DH was channel surfing this AM and stopped for a minute on Faux. I couldn't believe the sensationalized garbage they were spewing. The female host was basically calling Democrats evil and vile socialists.

Amazing that people are transfixed by this stuff.

16. There is nothing insulting about being compared to Stokely Carmichael-the bad rap he got
on his supposed sexist comment was a careless joke and media jumped on it to sell advertising.

NPR rarely does news . They have a point of view or bias woven through their commentary and Juan Williams doesn't toe the line.

33. My original point was that it was not an insult to M. Obama to be compared to Carmichael

Mary King was a young SNCC worker in the 60s. She co-wrote the first position paper in SNCC on sexism in the Civil rights Movement.

<http://www.maryking.info/> She is still active in the peace movement, is based in London, and does much work in Africa. She has stated recently that the most exciting advances for women today are taking place in Africa.

My post stated that it was no insult to be compared to Stokely Carmichael. The press tried to undercut Carmichael in the early days of Second Wave feminism when he made a joking answer to the question: what is the position of women in SNCC. He answered "prone" The press then tried to turn women in the movement agaist Carmichael (divide and conquer technique).

Mary King has pointed out that Carmichael was always a strong supporter of women and that his off the cuff joking remark was typical of him.

Not knowing that you were familiar with Carmichael's work I had included the reference to Stokely Carmichael's Wikipedia entry in my previous post. I think he is widely credited with minting the phrase "Black Power."

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stokely_Carmichael>

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

Carmichael participated in the Mississippi Freedom Summer, serving as a regional director for SNCC workers and helping to organize the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP). He was deeply disillusioned with the national Democratic Party when the party refused to seat the multi-racial MFDP delegation in place of the official all-white, pro-segregation Mississippi Democratic Party during the 1964 Democratic Party National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey.<2> This incident led him to seek alternative means for the political empowerment of African-Americans and to become increasingly influenced by the ideologies of Malcolm X and Kwame Nkrumah.

37. your perceptionand my perception of Stokely Carmichael are vastly
different than the view held probably 90% of the US that goes no deeper than the 6:30 half hour news. Let's be honest most people think of Carmichael as a violent terrorist etc, etc. And given an opening and opportunity I am sure FUX would love to do anything it could to fan the flames of guilt by association just as they did with Wright and Ayers.
Therefore while you and I know Carmichael was far from the personna painted in the (forever) right wing press, I would just rather not see another chance for FUX to go off on a crazy witch hunt again.
And for Juan Williams to say crap like that! Oy Vey, I wish NPR would throw his ass out.
I have a hard time listening to and believing NPR when they have the likes of Williams and Liason double dipping.

29. Say weren't you the champion of Sarah Palin on another thread?
The point of the Stokely Carmichael comment was to play up a "angry radical" stereotype of Michelle Obama that the right wing promotes.

But... you already knew that, didn't you? :eyes:

34. I champion women who are not afraid to stand up for their beliefs. Carmichael as a director of SNCC
also championed women but had been unfairly accused of being sexist by the press in the 1960s in an attempt to divide and conquer actors in the Civil rights movement

There is nothing wrong with righteous anger and it can be quite confounding when combined with Non Violence.
