I made this prediction: (

I would probably be safe in predicting that someone where I live here in WI
will go through the ice next week. The temperature has been above freezing and in the 40s today and will be about this warm for the next 5 days, but you can bet that someone will think that it is so nice that they should go ice fishing with predictable results. I would also not be surprised to hear of a vehicle going through the ice on a manmade lake that has a lot of fishing shanties on it. If they're lucky they won't die.
and yesterday it came true (even the lake I predicted):
http://lacrossetribune.com/articles/2009/02/12/news/z05ice.txtONALASKA — Two ice fishermen were wet and cold but escaped serious injury Wednesday night after both their vehicles broke through the ice on Lake Onalaska, officials said.
The first vehicle sank into the ice about 7 p.m., so the two paired up in the second vehicle only to have its back end go through as well, said Tri-State Ambulance Field Supervisor William Searles.
A bystander helped the men to shore near Hwy. 35 and Troy Street, Searles said.
The two men were treated on site and released, Searles said.
Yes, 5 days of 40 degree highs followed by a day with a 51 degree high, so it must be time to drive out on the ice. The DNR says vehicles should now stay off the ice, but there is no law against being stupid. These guys have 30 days to get their trucks out of the lake. What a pair of masterminds.
