1. I pretty much hate it. But there's CHOCOLATE
Yes. It's a contrived, stupid, made up holiday.

I hate it.

But there is that CHOCOLATE.

3. okay... too funny. I don't care - I'm gonna say it., it's only embarrassment - at least I'm not
Sarah Palin! See, life could be really embarrassing!

I just bought 36 of those big Cadbury Fruit & Nut bars because they clearanced them and wanted to make space for other items, so I paid 75 cents apiece for them at the store. Now, with how sad this stupid holiday makes me feel that probably wasn't the smartest purchase even if I did save about $40, but I promise to have no more than I can shove into my mouth at one time. HA

10. I bought a couple bags of chocolate to give away to friends at work.
You make take a useful, playful thing even from a contrived stupid holiday.

4. valentines day was great in grade school
do no work and get lots of candy/cards. However, it lost its appeal for me after that.

6. ha... true. we did do nothing at school on that day, didn't we? loved when a kid or two
brought cupcakes. I did that one year. But yeah, after school it lost appeal when I realized how heartbreaking the pursuit of love or losing love can be.

thanks for the reminder of the old days.

12. It's only fun in school if the teachers make sure it is fair.
Everyone should give everyone else a card. If some poor kid only gets a few cards, or gets mean cards, it can hurt.

16. oh thank God they did it the right way where I went to school
and I went to several - everyone had to give everyone else a card. I can imagine how mean it'd be if kids are allowed to pick and choose.

gave some out usually with a little candy heart to each student. This was in the 1950's. I have never really liked the holiday.

24. I subbed for a few years.
At the local high school, the cheerleaders had a fund raiser on valentine's day. They sold little boxes of candy hearts for a dollar apiece. Some kids would get enough boxes of candy hearts to induce diabetes. Some got nothing.

I would always find a nice girl I knew and swear her to secrecy. Then I would buy a few boxes of candy hearts for the kids who never got anything. High school kids get hurt feelings, too.

15. "real, lasting love is based on friendship, respect, and trust - things that take time to develop"
and daily work to cultivate and maintain.

good quote from the link. thanks. if anything - it should be a day about friendship, because not everyone is in love, but they market it as a lover's holiday.

17. the holiday is part of the unrealistic expectations marketing
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 02:33 AM by Triana
from retailers. It sells crap - flowers, etc. You can have friendship without romantic love - but romantic love without friendship won't last. It just won't. Romance alone won't cut it. Hot sex alone won't cut it. Flowers and chocolate - nope. If your lover isn't also your very good friend - forgetaboutit.

What makes lasting (love) relationships IS friendship, respect, and trust - not flowers, expensive gifts, romance, etc. Not that anyone could possibly get away without doing *something* for their partner on that day - but it should be a celebration of the relationship and a reaffirmation of the daily work that goes into cultivating those things - not some requirement based on marketing and rediculously unrealistic fantasy.

And, if someone is in a relationship and there's not much to celebrate, I'd think they might question just how well that relationship is serving them and depending on the answer, make some changes.

In the Marvin sense of being a very effective way of feeling wretched.
