Why do people like looking at car crashes?
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 09:16 AM by TheBigotBasher
Rubber necker is the name given to people who can not but help to slow down and look an accident. It is a horrible horrible thing to do and everyone hates them, wishes that the accident had never happened, whilst they themselves slow down to look at the accident.

I have to say I find myself now quite often lurking at sites like NoQuarter for the most perfect examples of stupid. It is a dirty and shameful hobby? I do like winding up the bigots there. Although I keep getting banned. Getting annoyed. Lurking and then posting using another IP. Good old Tor. To some extent, you expect to find stupid at the Free Republic. Sites like NQ have however introduced ever greater levels of stupid. Levels of stupid so stupid that scientists should open them up to examine them.

Given the history of SusanUnPC (a former Democratic activist and Daily Kos poster), her post today is just a reasonably moderate example of the stupid that lies beneath.

And now here’s the pathetic Andrew Sullivan sullying the pages of the once-esteemed The Atlantic magazine:

Sullivan has gone bats over the Gregg story. And, forgive me if I have a faulty memory, but hasn’t Andrew Sullivan been essentially a Republican until Obama? And wasn’t he in favor of the war in Iraq, as well as much of Bush’s policies? I mean, wasn’t he a reliable conservative all these years?

Until, for reasons unfathomable to other sentient beings, this man went so ga-ga for Obama that he can’t even think straight anymore?

And why would he even complain that the Republicans are indeed “at ware” with Obama, since that is precisely what opposing parties do? ”

Anyway is it rubber necking to go and laugh at bigots?

Is reporting back to the DU what you find the same as a cat returning with a mouse?

3. I divide the rubberneckers into two categories.
1. Those who have a macabre interest in the accident and injury.

2. Those who are impatient and bothered about the traffic delay and want to know why they were held up. Some almost want to rate whether their wait was warranted by the severity of the damage.

4. For rubber necking websites
I most certainly fit in to number one.

For rubber necking car crashes, my thought processes have gone wrong at the tend of a two hour tailback where you hear that the delay was caused by some idiot crashing as they approach the exit lane of a major intersection.

(Bad I know - for both!!!)

5. i dont "like" to look. it is a need almost. feels so disrespectful both to look
and not look. to look is invading and being sick. to not look is like ignoring something causing another pain....

it is odd though

but it is never to do with "like" looking

8. We rubber neck, looking for signs of life.
we are not looking for blood, we are looking for signs of life. I read that once and have since given into cranking my neck around as we drive by an accident, almost in silent, wishful. honor.

9. My theory: people have a passive-agressive desire to disrupt others' lives
It's the same reason people immediately move to the far left lane to drive 20 mph under the speed limit when ANY inclement weather hits. (It is hilarious watching allegedly "nice" Seattlites pull this maneuver when ANY amount of precipitation is falling.)
