The Republican scorched earth policy
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 11:08 AM by Cyrano
Almost 200 years ago, Napoleon invaded Russia. He burned and destroyed everything in his path on his way to Moscow. Unfortunately for him and his army, they had to retreat across that same scorched earth in the dead of winter. By the time he got out of Russia, his army had all but ceased to exist.

The Republican Party has been employing a scorched earth policy for at least the past 30 years. And now, even though they've been trounced in the past two elections, they're still desperately trying to destroy everything in their path while serving the same kool-aid to their shrinking base.

Republican actions can be viewed two different ways: (1) People sticking to their principles; (2) Crazy people sticking to a discredited ideology that the vast majority of Americans have rejected.

Today's Republican Party is capable of only one thing -- obstruction. Let's hope that, like Napoleon's army, today's Republican Party will cease to exist.

Another entity will rise to take their place so that we are not stuck with a one-party system. But there are very few people left who identify with the self-destructive behavior and/or insanity of the Republican Party.

1. I believe you are way too optimistic. McInsane got 50 million votes, didn't he?
That's 50 million people who subscribe to their scorched-earth policies. They will not go away, unfortunately.

3. "Scorched earth" is and was actually a retreat tactic. The Russians, under Czar Alexander ...

... put fire to anything that might be useful to the advancing French troops. Then, with the advent of the harsh Russian winter, the French troops were subjected to privation and the failure of their own attenuated supply lines. This tactic was repeated by the Russians in WW2 with the invasion of German forces, and then again by the German forces in retreat from the Russian forces.

It's far different from the tactics employed by Sherman in his march to the sea through Georgia during the Civil War.

absolutely correct. The scorched earth policy was carried out by the Russians, not the French. Ditto WWII vis-a-vis the Russians and Germans.

Perhaps there's a lesson that we Democrats can learn from these historic events.

It's time we stopped just bitching about the Republican echo chamber and their ownership of the MSM, and put our efforts into a way of (figuratively) burning it to the ground.
