Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R), who broke with his party to publicly endorse President Obama’s recovery package this week, is under attack from conservatives. Conservative icon Grover Norquist admonished Crist for supporting the stimulus, saying that Crist shouldn’t oppose a bill that the GOP will be using as a political tool for years to come:

Grover Norquist, the influential conservative leader of Americans for Tax Reform, said Crist should have been wary about embracing an 800-page bill he probably had not read and stands to be loaded with unpopular spending provisions that will surface over coming weeks and months.

“This is the bill that the Republican Party will be running against in 2010 and 2012 and 2014,” Norquist predicted.

If the economy is still bad in 2010, 2012 and 2014 will America want a party that caused the problems and is against all measures to save it, or the party that is interested in using the incredible power of the US government to try to help it's people in a time of need. If you listened to Obama's Lincoln address I think it's clear Obama's message isn't going to be an easy one to run against in the fashion they have chosen. It's not like the country abandon FDR even though none of his measures instantly fixed the economy.

First off, the public seems to be very much in favor of government acting here. The Republicans are looking terrible with everyone *but* their hardcore base.

If economic conditions were to deteriorate badly, their opposition to this bill won't be some great selling point-- they'll be seen as the people who obstructed and neutered a plan that might have prevented a crisis. Or at least, that's how it could easily be framed. If things improve then they'll look like they did after the New Deal.

Still, I do hope the GOP continues to be guided by the party's Norquists and Limbaughs. Old, failed strategists selling their old, failed strategies.
