There is, in fact, an element of bipartisan support for creating of a truth and reconciliation committee to investigate illegalities from the Bush years. And it comes from within Congress.

Rep. Walter Jones, a North Carolina Republican, has signed on as a co-sponsor of legislation introduced by House Judiciary Chair John Conyers to establish "a national commission on presidential war powers and civil liberties."

A self-described conservative who brought "Freedom Fries" to Congress, Jones developed into one of the most vocal Republican critics of the Bush administration. He took particular umbrage at the handling of the Iraq War and the decision to prohibit photographs of returning coffins of American soldiers. Late in the past administration's time in office he was reported to have been reading Vincent Bugliosi's book, "The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder."

So while it is surprising to see an elected Republican official endorse the establishment of an investigatory committee to probe the Bush years, it is slightly less surprising that that official is Jones.

Nevertheless, Democrats on the Hill who are committed to the idea are ecstatic to have the congressman on board. Jones' office did not return repeated requests for comment.

3. While I'm not wild about a commission, Jones turned against

the bush administration quite a while ago. It took a lot of courage since he is in a heavy military and republican district. Republicans have been relentlessly trying to smear him in elections there but he has held on.

9. Yes, those affected are behind him. The thousands of other veterans

in the area that stayed on after service or stayed on in a different capacity and not a part of bush's invasion though are on the other side.

2. I am impressed by Jones, a rare breed: Conservative with a Conscience

He started out as a typical brainless war-cheerleader, inventing the whole "Freedom Fries" crap and making fun of people who didn't get on the bandwagon, but he started to see through the lies and crap of the Bush administration and became a very vocal critic of the war, especially the treatment received by returning veterans.

If more Republicans were like Jones, i.e. susceptible to reality, we could actually work with them.

...is everything a Republican can hope for....
...complicit "Centrist" Democrats too. (Those who willingly joined with the Republicans in supporting and funding the Bush War Crimes)

This would be the very best way to sweep it all under the rug, and "move on in a bi-partisan spirit of healing". :puke:

They will be able to borrow this line from the 9-11 Commission:
"Everyone was responsible"...which means the same as "No one was responsible."
