Patch 'to boost female sex drive'

A patch which it is claimed can help women regain their sex drive is set to become available on the NHS.

It is the first treatment for women with low sex drive, but maker Procter and Gamble said it was not promoted as the female equivalent of Viagra.

Intrinsa will only be available on prescription for women who have had an early menopause because of surgery.

16. I'm not sure I can agree with that statement

30+ years of adult experience as a heterosexual man with numerous relationships speaking.

Drugs like Viagra serve to assist men in giving women good orgasms, which is often vital for the preservation of a relationship. I doubt that many men take Viagra when they are planning to spend a nice quiet evening alone.

Men are generally more reluctant than women to seek medical treatment in general. It wouldn't surprise me if a majority of men who seek treatment for erectile dysfunction do so at the goading of (perhaps even an ultimatum by) of their wives or girlfriends.

I've never had ED myself, but have seen first-hand what happens in middle life when a woman reaches a sexual "peak" and her needs increase dramatically. It's great to be a man at that time, if you are up to the task. Not being able to function would cause serious disappointment for both parties.

Look at it from a broader, less biochemical perspective.

Some older men want to have sex, but find they are not able to achieve an erection. Viagra fixes this.

Some older women want to have sex, but find they are not able to get in the mood. This patch would fix this.

I would say "female Viagra" might be slightly misleading, but it makes sense. And I'm betting it'll be covered eventually.

or lying.....many women have been taking low doses of testosterone for years. Estratest has been on the market for years although in pill not patch form.

Surgical menopause hit that area MUCH MUCH harder than I ever expected. :(

On edit: I'd love to take some testosterone, BUT apparently the female body treats it somewhat like estrogen (or the excess converts to estrogen). Can't take any of that until I'm 5 yrs cancer free from an estrogen-based cancer. I'm one year and counting now!

I'm not sure what you are referring to and maybe this isn't the place to get into it, but I have found that women I know who had hysterectomies (including myself) have typically suffered from lack of desire not lack of any kind of sensitivity. Testosterone works well for lack of desire.
