6. I can go along with that, but it needs to be sooner rather than later
This was a good spot, I think. The bill was generally viewed positively by the public, so long as the President (damn feels good to say that!) was out there selling it. If they'd gone all dramatic fillibuster on this, it would really stick in the average person's mind.

Then again, I think their general attitude, contrasted against Obama's generous attempts to reach out, has already left the desired impression in the minds of American voters, and that is: Republicans are stubborn obstructionists who don't want to do their part to help all of us in putting the country back together, after they ruined it.

This current bill might be the best of both worlds, though, because you're getting political value, and you're actually getting something done. Though the cost is that we're not doing enough - see Krugman today.

At some point, though, the Repubs will have to be called on their bluff. Sadly, Harry Reid has, to this point, shown no inclination to ever do anything like that, and just quietly accepts the 60 vote threshold for passing anything.

If Reid still won't push them, now that he has a popular President and public opinion on his side, he has to go.

5. Who would be paying attention to them on a holiday weekend?
It's the perfect time to force them to filibuster.
