As it is now if you have kids the government gives you a tax break. If you are poor and having kids, you dont pay taxes and the government will actually give you some money. If you have more kids you get more money. Obviously people in that situation arent getting rich, but the fact of the matter is that their children are being subsidized by those of us not in that situation.
I'm lower middle class, I'm unmarried, with no kids. If I got married knocked up my girlfriend then yeah I would probably qualify for earned income credit. I dont because I'm trying to better my situation right now, when I have children I dont want to raise them in poverty. Obviously anything can happen in the future and who's to say that wont somehow end up being the case, but as of right now we have the choice.
So while I try to be responsible by waiting to have children till later there are a good number of people out there who are not. Why do the rest of us have to pay for them to spread their genetic material around?
Obviously if we just withold any benefits from the parents that will mostly just harm the children, and they arent responsible for their situation. So what can be done to remedy the situation?
On a similar note, what about the tax deduction for children? Perhaps might it be good to not give one once someone has had so many children already? Like say you already have 4 children maybe you shouldnt get another deduction for having another child. At what point does having more children become a "luxury" in our society.
