Bill to ban hallucinogenic herb progresses

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) A bill banning possession of a hallucinogenic herb known as Salvia divinorum has passed the South Dakota House. And Vaughn Boyd, a Deadwood tobacco shop owner, says one look at Internet video of the drug's effects was all it took to convince her that's the right move.

After earlier news coverage of possible legislation to ban Salvia in South Dakota, Vaughn said her shop was inundated with people looking to buy the drug, thinking it might be found in a smoke shop.

She says her shop doesn't carry Salvia and never will.

Teenagers interviewed in Rapid City have said Salvia is all the rage, with several calling it a legal high that can be purchased over the counter in several Black Hills cities.

In Deadwood, a new city statute bans the sale of Salvia to minors.

Experts say it interacts with human brain chemistry in much the same way as LSD.

11. I can't speak to this exact hallucinogen, but what upsets me is that some very important medical

experiments are being done right now with the effects of hallucinogens on end-of-life terminal cancer patients, and it seems from the early results that it helps enormously in alleviating the fear of death. In fact, they seem to provide many with enormous relief. So, generally, I think it would be very sad to outlaw any experimentation with hallucinogens.

poppy garden! This was in Northern California in the late Seventies. I saw it with my own eyes. She had no clue.

There are lots of different kinds of salvia, most are not hallucinogenic. I have a salvia divinorum, actually, because I like interesting plants. Haven't experimented with it and may never, but it is a lovely, very hardy houseplant that likes to drink a lot of water.

It's really not a pleasant high, only lasts about 10 minutes and it tastes HORRIBLE. It's completely legal here, BTW.
