Texas' Lampson Undergoes Bypass Surgery

WASHINGTON - Rep. Nick Lampson, who replaced former Majority Leader Tom DeLay in the House, underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery over the weekend and is recovering in a Houston hospital.

Lampson went for a routine checkup at the national Naval Medical Center on Friday and his doctor noted some irregularities, said Bobby Zafarnia, a spokesman for the Texas Democrat.

"They got in touch with his doctors in Houston, he was going to head to the district anyway, they recommended he come in immediately for a checkup and that's when they decided to do the bypass," Zafarnia said.

The surgery was done Sunday to treat blockages of arteries on the surface of his heart and was performed at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston.<snip>
