Obama's photo taken down after customers complain...
at the Peterson Air Force Base commissary.

http://www.gazette.com/articles/presidents_48070___article.html/obama_commissary.html

<snip>
President Barack Obama's picture was removed this week from a Presidents Day sign at the Peterson Air Force Base commissary after customers complained that the image did not fit the holiday commemorating the birthdays of past presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

The head of the local NAACP and a commissary employee say it was blatant racism.

<snip>
Rosemary Harris, president of the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said something more sinister was afoot.

"It bodes poorly for the progress that we hoped we would see in this country; we might have taken one step forward but we see many steps being taken backwards," she said Friday.

A cashier at the commissary who did not want her name used said pictures of past presidents, including George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, have accompanied the Presidents Day closure sign.

One customer, a military retiree, objected this year because of Obama's race, the cashier said.

"He said they're not going to have no black man on the window where he shops," the cashier said.

30. The window of a commissary? That is a privilege that service persons
are given with cheaper costs. If they do not like the picture of the President of the USA up in a military establishment then they can shop in the higher priced stores.

Name one. The NAACP was created by jews to gain support for their own acceptance in american culture. With the jews and negroes on the same team, their numbers could influence congress to pass laws against racial oppression. When the negroes needed the jews support for segregation issues in the south, the jews refused to show up and help. It's all in nation archives, if needed I can post the links.

Where were the Dem. Party? "When the negroes needed the jews support for segregation issues in the south, the jews refused to show up and help." OH what Ted Kennedy and Al Gore Father were fighting for segregation of the south.

Who can not see pass race. These people are the true bigots and raciest. They are the ones who can not look past the color of someone skin. of the browser window?) I went to the site and the comments need this script to display.

This particular batch of comments is only depressing and serves mainly as a reminder of just how whacked-out so many Americans are, but knowing how your browser is set up can be very helpful in the future.

7. The holiday doesn't commemorate the sitting President, never has . . .
and these days can commemorate more than Washington and Lincoln. Some states honor all Presidents on this date, others those Presidents with close association to their state in addition to Washington and Lincoln. It's all very higgledy-piggledy, with as many variations it seems as there are States and/or past Presidents, though none indicate involvement of the sitting executive.

That said, the attitudes of those who object in this story are despicable, and deserve all the scorn that can be lumped upon them. A valid objection to the picture might be made, just not for the racism or politics advanced by those cited in the article. (As the image itself isn't shown, it's hard to say how legitimate any objection might be.)

It stated that Bush and Clinton's pictures were displayed along with the others in the past.

Why would anyone object to a sitting President's picture being anywhere? It's blatant ignorant ass racism and it's not a legitimate objection no matter how you spin it.

26. Journeyman..
I completely understand what a sitting president is and everything you stated about the holiday. I also understand the only reason it's an issue. The President's ethnicity is the entire problem here.

I highly doubt that anybody would complain about another President's picture being on a sign closing a store on Presidents day. It really doesn't matter if they celebrate them all or exclude the sitting President in this particular case.

41. I see both as a matter of disrespect
John Kerry was a sitting Senator. I expect members of our Armed Forces to have enough intelligence and integrity to respect the office, even if they don't respect the man.

When those Marines - non-coms - were interviewed, they said they didn't shake his hand because "they supported our Commander-in-Chief," proof positive that our educational system had utterly failed those young men.

I don't care for anyone being disrespectful, but when someone is in uniform - or utilizing the advantages of a commissary on a military base - I expect a bit more where our President - or a Senator - is concerned.

should be able to say what he likes (within "fire" in movie theatre thing), and I also disagree that just because you are in the military you should lose your freedom of speech outside business hours. He has he freedom to express his racism. I wish "isms" were not present, but he has the right to express it. As I have the right to call him a narrow minded bigot.

If he doesn't want to shop where there is a picture of a black president, he can go elsewhere. I don't think removing Obama's picture to appease him was right.

29. In a Military Comisary?
:wtf:

That's fucked up that anyone military would take down a picture of the commander in chief that way. x(

Their racism is more powerful than their patriotism, and they don't care who sees that. If civilians did this they should get fired. If military people did this then heads should roll.

The retired bastard that demanded the photo be removed should be escorted off the base and instructed not to come back.

32. Fuck Colorado Springs.
As a liberal veteran who was stationed at Cheyenne Mountain/NORAD *and* Falcon Air Station (since renamed), and who lived (briefly) in a dorm on Peterson AFB, and spent a LOT of time in Colorado Springs, I have the right, no, the DUTY to say that.

FUCK. COLORADO. SPRINGS.

One of the most back-asswards towns I have ever visited, and I've seen a whole SHITLOAD of 'em. Mainly because of the back-assward retiree population.

Now BOULDER on the other hand...groovy place.

but as a lifelong resident who keeps going back on winter and summer break, I can safely say the town has gotten way better in the last 10 years or so.

51. There is no Presidents' Day holiday (not at the Federal level)
And Colorado does not have it as a state holiday either.

The Federal holiday is "Washington's Birthday". So I would think that it is technically correct that the current president (or anyone but Washington) should not be included as part of the holiday.

38. I believe that the President of the United States should...
Go to this air force base and to this particular commissary and buy something? Then, should he ask "Hey I heard you guys took my picture down?, that's OK, but the bad news is your all going to Afghanistan because I am the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States and you'll see my picture in the chow hall there" That would be sweet justice, please make that happen god, please? I love the "what if" scenario, please add more to my limited thought process.

44. The President/CIC's photo is always appropriate on military installations.
And if all the old retired farts living in Colorado Springs don't like it, let them buy their damn food at some grocery store that isn't subsidized by their federal government.

58. Who knows why this happened?
I find it said that this is a priority for the NAACP though. They used to go after rights being violated, like bus segregation and voter intimidation. Now it's all about being "offended."

She is currently the Commissary Store Director at one of the Navy bases. She is so sick of customers complaing she would like to just quit and walk out the door. I have to keep reminding her "just four more years to retirement". I forwared that news article to her. I know what her reply will say.
