Important Maya Architecture Finding in Uxmal
Source: INAH

Specialists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) discovered an earlier façade in the Great Pyramid in Uxmal Archaeological Site that represents the antecedents of Puuc architectural style, which splendor occurred during the Late Classic period (900-1000 AD).

Jose Huchim Herrera, man in charge of the Uxmal Archaeological Project, declared this finding is important because it demonstrates the evolution of Puuc architecture, famous for its fine carved stone mosaics, thin and precisely cut, that cover facades in different Maya cities.

“Development of this architecture is important because it influenced zones outside Puuc region. The early constructive stage discovered confirms that Maya from Puuc region achieved a little later a specialized process consisting on precisely cut and tenoned stone mosaics.

“Serpent motives abound in Puuc style, decorating friezes and sides of buildings. Other motives are geometrical, stepped frets, X shapes, and small columns,” he detailed.

The discovered section revealed a design that dates from 250-500 AC, which shows variants to the Nunnery or the Palace of Governor, buildings from the Late Classic period.
