Jail Holds Inmate 'Idol' Singing Contest

A jail in Phoenix held what is believed to be the state's first-ever singing contest featuring inmates performing for prizes in a knockoff of the popular "American Idol" TV show.

The "Inmate Idle Con-Test" was held at Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Tent City at the Maricopa County Jail and featured more than 100 singing inmates.

Arpaio, who is known as America's toughest sheriff, was one of the judges, along with Alice Cooper and an Elvis impersonator. The report said Arpaio was compared to "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell during the event.

"Joe was the grouchy one," Cooper said. "He was the judge that wasn't going to give them a break."
