Tweety is saying repeatedly that today is Washington's Birthday ....
but we celebrate it as President's Day. George Washington was born on Feb. 22.

5. That may be, but the official name is "Washington's Birthday"
Edited on Mon Feb-16-09 08:10 PM by MercutioATC
...and that's probably why Tweety is calling it "Washington's Birthday".

11. Thanks
I always thought they changed it to President's Day. How peculiar, and why wouldn't they?

12. Unofficially, it probably became known as "Prez Day" after they added Lincoln.
Edited on Mon Feb-16-09 09:05 PM by MercutioATC
...so both are really correct.

13. It was Wshington & Lincoln, first
We always had both off in February. Then they added Martin Luther King Day, and limited the one holiday in February. I have always heard it called President's Day since then. Never had any idea that it wasn't officially changed.

14. I'm a federal employee, so I knew it was still Washington's Birthday, but
the media likes Presidents' Day better.

2. The holiday used to be officially a Washington' s birthday celebration.
It's only been in recent years that they added Abe Lincoln into it and called it "President's day"

Lincoln on 2/12, Washington on 2/22.

They combined them and called it Presidents day.

10. And isn't it cool that Lincoln and Darwin were born on the exact same day, 200 years ago?
I just learned that one last week...

17. That is correct.
I know, because I share my birthday with Lincoln, so as a kid I thought everyone got their birthday off! LOL! Mighty annoyed when they took "my" day away! Fascists!

16. Here's a good explanation...

Washington's Birthday was first celebrated as a holiday in the District of Columbia in 1880. It was made a federal holiday in 1885. The holiday was originally held on the anniversary of George Washington's birth, on February 22. In 1971, this holiday was moved to the third Monday in February.

This holiday is legally designated as "Washington’s Birthday". Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is the federal government’s policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.
