Drunk Driving
IS THE WAR ON DRUNK DRIVING FACT-DRIVEN OR EMOTION-DRIVEN? 3/24/06
Is it possible that strict enforcement of ever more aggressive “drunk driving” laws is not only costly, in every sense of the word, but also a great example of taking action based upon untrue, emotion-driven conclusions?
Is MADD a neo-prohibitionist movement bent on ending social drinking?
Now as always, let me be clear. I’m not here to defend driving after drinking any amount of alcohol. In fact, I’d guess that nobody will defend that. But in fact, that could be part of the problem if my upcoming guest on the Truth-Driven Thinking Podcast is right – nobody is taking the other side of this argument, and there are unanticipated costs that result.
Dr. David J. Hanson, retired sociologist from State University in New York, Potsdam, will be joining me as an expert in alcohol related statistics on my upcoming Podcast/Internet Radio show (listen for free when it airs within two weeks). Dr. Hanson hosts two web sites, www.alcoholinformation.org and www.alcoholfacts.org, and has been studying and compiling data on alcohol for years as part of his work in sociology. A great deal of information can be found on his web sites and I’d urge you to check them out.
On the point of the data, much information is available that parses the alleged “lie” of MADD and our government HTSA figures. Are they right? I don’t know, you be the judge.
A couple web sites with all the citations, arguments and data:
http://www.geocities.com/dammdrinker/HTMLcontents.html is Stephen A Beck’s web site. Also see www.getmadd.com.
By all means please listen for free to my Podcast interview with Dr. Hanson, Wednesday, March 29th, 2006. You can listen on any computer, MP3 player, IPOD or other mobile device with audio capabilities.
