Repubs on Capitol Hill don't get it ... we are incredibly close to a major meltdown...
The situation in Calif is nearing catastrophic ... "Governor prepares to send out 20,000 pink slips (California)" .... GM and Chrysler are teetering on bankruptcy, and total Union busting concessions even if they avoid filing formal bankruptcy ... States have run out of $$ to pay unemployment benefits, tax refunds, etc. ... Financial institutions are still laying off workers left and right(ie. Bank of Amer to layoff 35,000 over next 2-3 yrs) ... Real estate is still tanking and house values have dropped 20% or more ....

When people feel they have nothing left to lose, they generally resort to protests that might be unthinkable otherwise.

The Obama Stimulus bill will help ... but as Paul Krugman put it tonight on KO Countdown, "It will just keep the economy from going down as steeply... but it is not enough. (Obama) will have to come back for more... and where are those 3 Repub votes going to come from?" (paraphrase)

I am afraid we haven't seen the worst yet by a longshot.... and the Repubs congratulate themselves for all voting NO! They deserve to be run out of D.C. on a rail!

1. Our GOP here in East TN are now lining up to get the "Stim" money.
Of course, that's after they fought against it, spoke against it, inveighed against it, and then voted against it.

But now they're lined up for it.

be released tomorrow? I hope so.

3. There are so many states in trouble ... it is not just Calif on the edge ....
NC has a $2bil 'hole' in its budget, and we borrowed another $13mil from the Feds to pay unemployment benefits for a couple of weeks.

And our unemployment numbers keep rising....

7. That's why I am advocating nuclear option in this time of national emergency
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 12:03 AM by Hawkeye-X
51 votes is needed for a simple majority on ALL bills, and no Rethuglican amendments allowed.

When the crisis is over, the nuclear option can be revoked back to normal 3/5 majority.

8. They are counting on it.
They need it to happen so they can try to claw their way back into power.

10. Oh,
they get it. What they don't get though is that when they run around during the campaign in for 2010 they're going to have to answer one basic question:

"Why did you continue to vote against money that would have helped our state?"

Republicans only think things half way through. They still haven't gotten the message that the American people, for the most part, woke up in 2006 and in a big way in 2008 and told them that their way sucks.

As far as Krugman goes, he's right, more will be needed. But anyone who listened to President Obama knows that he said himself this is only the start.
