1. My dear babylonsister!
We love our home! It was a custom built one, and it suits us completely...

We've been here 7 years now...

We plan to live here forever...

37. After places like Washington, Boston and Barcelona, I thought I was a city boy, too
But this is only an 18 minute drive or commuter train ride from downtown Düsseldorf,
which even Napoléon called "my little Paris on the Rhein," and it's even less than
that to the airport, so it's not like we're out in the boonies.

5. Our old house is perfect for us, and we love it but the town is rather blah....
Although we have both lived with much worse. We won't be moving either.

We also have a very convenient location after several years of living in the country, and that made a great difference to us.

10. My rent stabilized hell hole on the edge of Greenwich Village?
I adore it, shower in the kitchen, no washer dryer, no dishwasher, no anything that takes much current since the whole place runs on one 15 amp fuse.....I always dreamed of living in the Village. The tenant before me, according to my neighbors, was Leonard Bernstein's pianist lover. I have no idea how he fit a piano into this place.

I have a subway on each corner. I have a supermarket across the street. And there used to be a fig tree and a stand of corn growing on my roof. And a cash crop on the roof next door but that was a long time ago.

My mom's in Bayside.

15. 15 years in a custom built three story chalet type home......
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 03:05 AM by FrenchieCat
The front of the house from the street is deceiving, as it looks like we only have a garage and a front door and a few windows on the one floor that can be seen from the street. That's because it is the back of the house that drops two more stories down into the hill, and has picture windows all over each floor with magnificent views of San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area and losta of Deck living (3 large decks), so I'm happy....especially since I work at home! :)

The only drawback is we have no backyard to speak of although we have land (retaining wall cost nearly as much as the house to build) as we do sit on a rather steep hill.

Very intergrated neigborhood.....it is the Bay Area, after all.

21. Yes. because it's Chicago
I love Chicago. We live in a nice 3 bedroom apartment (2nd floor of a two-flat) a half-block from the L, in a GREAT ethnic neighborhood. I grew up on a boring farm, and this is dream city for me.

It was nice to be able to walk down to the end of the alley, get on the train, and go straight to Grant Park on Election night.

Except for the winters. I miss the L. I miss the ethnic neighborhoods, the food, the Cubs, the Blackhawks, the Lakefront, all the festivals, the museums, the architecture and public art... At least I have WGN, and I can get its radio counterpart in on a clear night.

Now, I'm really homesick. :-(

30. Love where I live,
The house needs some work, but is in good shape overall. But the land is absolutely wonderful, twenty acres out in the middle of nowhere. I've got deer, geese, foxes and pheasants as some of my regular visitors. Love the sound and solitude of the country, none of the constant background rumble of the city, none of the smell of the city. Sure, some of my neighbors are on the conservative side, but they are still good people and we get along fine (and I've been able to get some of them to vote Democratic)

The only way I'm leaving here is to be carried out.

33. Love the location, hate the house.
Beautiful, rural hillside known for daffodils in the spring and only 3 miles from shopping and services. The house should have been our first house 30 years ago. We might be nearly through with the renovations if it had been. Lots of potential, but the owners (us) have started to peter out and can't afford to hire contractors to finish it. We need a construction stimulus package.

35. House yes. Location, no.
I live in South Carolina's left arm pit. This is "horse country". So, not only do we have the usual share of ignorant rednecks and bible-thumpers, we also have the old money republican snobs, both local and transplants, who think that because they can afford their big horse farms, they own everything else, too.

But, I like my house. It is not perfect, but it works out okay. There are things I would love to do to it, but since I am one of the 10% of the people in this state who lost her job, I'm doing all I can to make my mortgage payments as it is. I also like my neighbors. I have Democrats on both sides of me, which is a rarity around here.

I spent the last seven years in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, which I'm convinced is one of the best places to live in the country. The natural beauty and sense of community are both top-notch.

Now I'm living in Toledo, Ohio, within view of the Ohio Turnpike. This place is fugly, and the local pastime seems to be driving to the mall.

54. Best place on earth!!!
The Pioneer Valley of Western Mass, that is.

I was born here and have lived here for 56 years (except for a brief stint in Central Tennessee, which was nice, but not "home").

I now live in the foothills of the Berkshires, in one of the small rural Hilltowns.

This part of the state is way underrated and under advertised...you know, when the travel pamphlets come out and it's all about the eastern part of the state...Boston and the shore. We're virtually ignored out here. Which is good, in a way, because we do get the undisturbed peace and beauty.

Anyway, it was nice to see that someone else knows the area and appreciates it as much as I do...

45. I like it a lot. House is very old and taking forever to fix up, but it's starting
to look nice--although I'd kill for floors that aren't sagged, sloped and bouncy, and for siding that isn't shedding relatively new paint in massive sheets (WTF? Paint only lasts three years?). My garden areas are starting to look good, finally (had to rip out 130 years' worth of overgrown shrubbery)--need to put in some trees in the big empty yard. My town is small and typically midwest/rural, but has most of what we need, there are some nice folks, some assholes, same as everywhere. My kids walk two blocks to school, and kids can't get away with shit in this town, which is a blessing--they get scolded by neighbors and then tattled on, LOL (it takes a village, here). Love to watch the seasons pass in the surrounding farmland: cows in the snowy cornfields, spring planting, first shoots of corn and beans, harvest, etc. Don't know that I want to be here forever, but it's a fine place for us right now.

We moved here,Idaho, from Seattle 5 yrs. ago. I love my house and land, but I hate it here. In 5 yrs. I have yet to make a friend in real life. My neighbors tell me everyday that my family and I are going to hell.
My daughter was picked on in school because she does not attend church, it got so bad that now I have to commute 100 miles a day just to give her a decent education, she was also picked on for being smart, they like stupid here.
But my house and land, awesome, I have a fruit orchard, grapes, my own water, the best soil, 25 different species of mature trees.
A big downfall is the amount of pesticides the neighbors use all around us. It is so bad, they wear enviro suits when they spray. We don't use any toxic spray, we use concentrated garlic oil, tried to talk them into it, no way were they going to listen.
Help me!!!

60. Yes -- both the city (Portland, Ore.), the neighborhood and our house.
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 12:04 PM by Arugula Latte
Our neighborhood is quiet and leafy, close-knit and very liberal, and we're minutes from downtown. The schools are good and we have a fabulous park and recreation system (including a top-notch nearby community center). Our house is great (although, if we had more money, we could fix it up more and work on the yard, which could use a lot of help). We have lots of trees on our lot and 2600 sf for four people, three indoor cats and an indoor bunny, and that includes two mostly work-at-home people. I feel good about it because we use every room in the house every day, including the two home offices. We're not too far from the ocean, not far from Mt. Hood (including year-round snow), not far from U-pick farms for things like fresh Oregon strawberries in June :loveya: and we have easy access to magnificent forests for camping and hiking. Plus, Oregon just keeps getting bluer and bluer, and the food scene here just keeps getting tastier and tastier :9.

:)

Edited to say, I've lived in San Francisco as a single person, so it's hard to beat that, but Portland is much easier for us as a family with two kids. I've also lived in DC, which was a lot of fun and very exciting -- great city.

64. I live in North Georgia, just northwest of Atlanta.
I love it here. I moved from Miami, Florida to Georgia in 1989 and wish I had done it sooner. My town of Woodstock, even though it is totally Republican, is a great place. I have the convenience of great shopping, restaurants, etc., within a 5 mile radius. The only drawback is that the horrible Atlanta traffic has moved north.

67. I'm in coastal Los Angeles County, I love it except
I'm on a busy street that has too much traffic and nose. I love the house and area just wish I was on a quiet street.

68. The house, yes.
I moved to a family home which is over 100 yrs old. A Victorian Gothic in a little town.

I love hearing the birds sing, having room to garden and not having to answer the phone.

However, I really miss Houston and have to go there once every month or two to see movies and concerts. We don't have any friends here to speak of. They all voted for McCain and hate Obama.

The county went 2 to 1 against Obama.

69. Yes. I came to Calif's Central Coast in 1979 and raised my kids here. Met & married Mr. H here...
Mr. H has been here since 1964, and he would never be any place else. Framed by the mountains and the sea, which is exactly what I wanted since I came from Hawaii originally; we are about 3 or 4 miles from the beach. A branch of UC, a community college, a couple of private colleges and graduate schools, music, art, all that awaits the inquiring mind. Good neighbors. Loads of opportunities to get politically or otherwise involved.

There are definitely problems here, but do I love this community? Oh yes. By now my roots go very deep.

Hekate

72. It depends on how you define place.
I love the planet in all her diverse glory.

In my country, I particularly love the drier, loftier west.

Where I am currently, I love the trees, the dry climate, the cold winters and relatively mild summers, the views of the cascades, and the wide open spaces. I would like it if I could grow table grapes and more fruit and perrenial herbs, but other than that, I love it.

If you mean the community created by people, there are things to like and things to oppose in any community I've ever lived in. I've yet to find a community in any one place that I "loved." I love parts of it, tolerate parts, and actively oppose parts, no matter where I've been.

Why?
