I think its time for Senator Burris to Give Governor Quinn his Letter of Resignation

Edit: So now he admits to actually "trying to raise" money for Blago

The man is a disgrace to Democrats, the State of Illinois, and this Country.

Illinois, and the Country as a whole deserves somebody with at least a little bit of decency or character to replace President Obama. It was clear from the beginning that Burris was never that man.

He should resign as soon as possible, and let Governor Quinn appoint somebody else.

Edit: It originally said raising money, but he only tried to...which in the grand scheme of things matters little.

1. The guy who built a monument to himself is probably not going to
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 02:30 PM by TwilightGardener
leave the Senate gracefully--it's going to be kicking, screaming, and deploying tooth and claw, something tells me. (That's pretty much how he got INTO the Senate, after all)

4. Yep. I thought that the first time I heard about him. He can now
engrave his monument with "Senator", and should now go on to oblivion...although I'm sure that's the last thing he's considering!

7. That's what I thought too--now he can add "U.S. Senator" to his tombstone
and call it done--but I think he'll pull a Blago and wait for the hook instead of stepping down.

5. Yes, but it is clear he has been less then truthful. He should go away, quietly.

I think he screwed himself. But that is just me.

17. Probably both. I'd want my colleagues to give me at least as much...
benefit of the doubt as the legal system does, not less benefit of the doubt. He screwed himself and the Dem party probably had no good options but they sure were quick to abandon him. Many accused but not convicted politicians serve. If I were Blago, I'd be pissed too. That doesn't mean he had no role in bringing about his problems though. (There are multiple causal factors involved.)

10. Appointing a new Sen who had a chance at being elected in 2010 would be nice
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 02:39 PM by Bonn1997
that would be better than keeping Burris until 2010. It would allow a stronger candidate to run as an incumbent.

11. Dont fall for this? This isnt some GOP trick.
He originally failed to mention that Blago's brother went to him to ask him to raise money for Blago. Then, he admitted to that, but said he raised no money. Now, he is admitting to trying to raise money

Get your head out of the sand. Burris is doing this to himself, and nobody should stand by his side because he's a Democrat.

15. I don't see how he is a disgrace
but the media is sure after him. Even presumably liberal sites like TPM and DU jump right on the bangwagon and are happy to lynch one of our own.

"somebody with at least a little bit of decency or character"

Right, because Burris has none of that. Apparently there are only two types of people angels and devils, and now Burris has shown himself to be a devil.

BTW he did not "admit to raising money for Blago". So clearly you are a hugh liar and a disgrace to this discussion board.

That may seem to be against the rules, but I am playing by your rules. Any mistake, any error or untruth, any extra details that seem to contradict other statements prove that a person is worthless. This is the standard we are gonna apply now to all Democrats. You are perfect and all-knowing, or you are scum.

16. He admitted to trying to raise money for Blago, and "One of Our Own"...wow.
It amazes me how some people are blinded by Party Loyalty. We dont have to stand by every single Democrat. Sometimes they are wrong, and they need to be called on it.

Burris loyalty.

They're taking this Burris stuff way, way too personally.

26. because we also piled on Daschle
But he shouldn't feel alone, since many on DU regularly attack Pelosi, Reid, and whoever else fails to meet a standard of perfection.

Not to say that attacks on, say, Pelosi, are never justified, but that it always seems to go way over the top. Pelosi is not just imperfect, she is worthless. To the point, I guess, where I would be no better off with Pelosi as my Congresswoman than I am with the Republican Lynn Jenkins.

19. First, it's not illegal to raise money for Blago
Second, he did not try all that hard. He made some calls and talked to some people. But hey, let's put a taint on Democrats raising funds for other Democrats. Clearly, it was a conspiracy that he was trying to buy the Senate seat for $10,000. :eyes:

No, we do not have to stand by every Democrat, but it would be nice if there was some hesitation before we joined the crowd screaming "crucify him!" and adding to the mud thrown at him after reading a few stories in the media. Wrong is one thing. Disgraceful, no redeeming features, no character, no decency scum is entirely another.

Two salient facts remain, in my eyes
1) He has had a decent career as a Democratic politician
2) He did not do anything that should disqualify him from being a Senator

I am no more blinded by party loyalty than you are blinded by the RWNM and a zero tolerance cynicism.

23. What he did might be legal, but he originally said he had 1 contact with Blago's people about this
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 03:44 PM by MadBadger
Then he said he was contacted by Blago's brother, but did not agree to contribute money to Blago, but now he admits to at least trying to raise money

How many story changes will you stand by before you realize that the man is not worth standing by?

27. the story is not changing that much
From summary to details it looks like there are differences, but they don't look that huge to me. In the end, though, after consulting another lawyer, he said it would look bad to raise funds at that time. So that bottom line stays the same.

I don't think the story has changed enough to make him worthy of attack, although clearly Republicans are looking for an opening. Just like they were looking for a reason to not seat him from the beginning.
