Limbaugh to listeners today: The states aren't out of money...

It's all a fairy tale. All the money in the stimulus package for the states is just unnecessary pork.

Trust me, Rush, I'm thinking offhand, that governors aren't too pleased politically speaking, to be announcing that their states must lay off state workers, suspend pensions and also suspend state income tax refunds....

21. Of course, one of the primary reasons Cali is out of money...
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 03:31 PM by gcomeau
...massive global economic disaster aside, is that the residents of the state pay almost 300 billion dollars in federal taxes, but receive only about 250 billion back in federal spending. Similar ratios apply to states like... New York, New Jersey, Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, Deleware, Minnesota, Wisconsin... sense a pattern?

Meanwhile, the residents of Mississippi pay about 12 billion in Federal taxes and get back 25 billion in Federal spending. Where did that extra money come from? All the blue states tax revenues, that's where.

Alabama? Pays 24 billion in taxes, gets 42 billion back.
West Virginia? 9 billion in taxes, 16 billion back.
Alaska? 5 billion in taxes, 9 billion back.
North Dakota? 4 billion in taxes, 7 billion back.
Louisiana? 20 billion in taxes, 39 billion back.
Kentucky? 22 billion in taxes, 34 billion back.

Etc...

If California got as much Federal spending poured back into the state as it pays out in Federal taxes it would completely erase their entire budgetary shortfall with cash left over. But of course that would bankrupt all those red states who basically exist in a state of perpetual large scale welfare while all the Republican legislators who represent them demonize Democrats for the evils of "wealth distribution" and point at the budget problems California is currently having and blame it on California being "Liberal" while they cash the checks the Federal government is writing them backed by California's money.

27. There are a couple blue states in the receiving column.
Hawaii gets significantly more federal funding than it pays into the system... so does Maine... but pretty much EVERY deep red republican state, with the sole exception of Texas which is basically break-even, is a net drain on federal tax revenue. The blue states carry the load as far as the federal budget goes.

36. Aha! Additional link.
Found the original 2005 data from the source cite. It's buried in a cumulative historical review of all the data for the last 2 and a half decades and not as conveniently formatted as the other tables unfortunately... but it does have a lot more info to browse through for historical trends.

20. No different than the lie he's been telling for 20 years.
You aren't paying taxes for services, you are paying taxes to enable govt "waste."

It's the lie behind all anti-tax propaganda. If you told voters the truth, that they can pay lower taxes if they want to live without roads and police and fire fighters and libraries and social security, the GOP couldn't get a candidate elected for dog-catcher.

Can someone post Rush's email addresses? We should all Google "our state name" and budget shortfall - get the most recent story and then email it to Rush.

Tenn. budget shortfall reaches almost $500 million
By ERIK SCHELZIG, 02.06.09, 03:05 PM EST
pic

Tennessee's tax collections have fallen nearly a half-billion dollars short of expectations through the first six months of the current budget year.

The state Finance Department says general fund revenues came in at nearly $103 million below projections in December. That brought the shortfall for the first half of the fiscal year to $482 million.

Maybe if he gets hundreds of these, he'll realize that, yes, the states ARE out of money.

of this dick head's latest bullshit to every governor's office in the country!

While this multimillionaire bloviator sack of shit spews his bile day after day, governors around the nation are dealing with revenue shortfalls of record proportions. They are laying off teachers and first responders and cutting services.

And the urgency of these governors' actions is forced in many cases by the very laws that Reaganomics with blowhard's like Limpballs pushing all the way that are now in force in some states--laws that require balanced budgets, laws that require super legislative majorities or voter referendum to raise taxes.

These assholes passing their "all taxes are bad" bullshit have left the states fully impotent in dealing with a crisis such as this. And I'm sure that lying sack of steaming shit Limbaugh knows full well he is lying.
