Poor lil piyush jindal in a bind
the governor of LA, dubbed by political expert and drug addict limbaugh to be the next reagan has a big decision to make. Take th stimulus money for his state or not (or maybe just some of it.) Is his dilemma and decision based on integrity and honesty? He's a republican, hell no it isn't. Poor piyush has been tapped by the leaders of the "No We Can't" Party to give their response to President Obama's SOTU. Poor piyush, should I reject the money then trash the man or should I take take the money then trash the man?

And adding to poor piyush's dilemma, he will be giving his response when most of his home state will be drunk from Mardi Gras festivities. What's a zealot to do?

1. Saying "Piyush Jindal" is really no different from saying "B. Hussein Obama." nt

4. Obama
didn't change his name for political reasons. Piyush changed his name to Bobby to make him more acceptable to white people in Louisiana. and he made up a story to cover that fact.

7. Technically he hasn't actually changed his name
it's still, legally, Piyush.

10. I agree with Bosshog with this one..If President Obama had changed his moniker to "Barry"...
...then you might have a point...

16. People have the right to choose their names.
Right-wingers justify their "B. Hussein Obama" by claiming that Obama was running from his heritage in his failure to use his given middle name in public. They justify calling him the diminutive "Barry" in that he called himself "Barry" up until he first 'became politically active in college.'

I do not presume to declare the reasons, nefarious or legitimate, for anyone's choice of name. That said, even if he effectively changed it to avoid racist repercussions, than use of his ethnic name seems designed to stoke those racial demons. If Mr. Jindal chooses to go by Bobby, then I will respect that.

29. I prefer honesty. I may as well call myself Amaury to pander to the French.
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 06:14 PM by Deja Q
Just be honest. No more chicanery and pandering. No wonder people dislike politicians.

At the same time, there is no evidence to really suggest he changed his name to "Bobby" to appeal to some southern honky whitey Murkans...

Added: Please forgive my cynicism...

34. When it comes to names, I'd rather make a stand for civility than for "honesty."
After all, I cannot help but feel such claims of "honesty" are empty, as it's really only ever brought up in politics (as compared to, say, show business), and at that only ever brought up by political opponents of the names in question...

11. Doesn't matter one teeny tiny little bit.
The man has a right to be called by the name he chooses to go by. Don't be juvenile. I've got a hundred and one criticisms I can heap on Jindal but "felt compelled to go by a less ethnic name to try to avoid having his political career undermined by ignorant reactionary morons" isn't one of them. On that particular issue the criticism should be directed at the ignorant xenophobic idiots who created the pressure for him to feel he had to go by something else in the first place.

We sure as hell shouldn't be reinforcing their idiocy ourselves.

13. If it doesn't matter
one tiny bit then I'll keep referring to him by the name his mother and father gave him. He's a politician and as you no doubt agree his actions were driven for political reasons.

20. I sure did
jindal has been running for political office since high school. God knows what he would run for if elected president. His name alteration was political in nature. My using his parent given name is political as well. You call it juvenile, I suggest it is talking in their tone. I've waxed philosophical with conservatives for decades, the vast majority of them (especially southerners) know only one way to communicate.

24. So...
You call it juvenile, I suggest it is talking in their tone.

When exactly did you come to the conclusion that "their tone" and "juvenile" were describing two different things? Or is this you denying an accusation of childish behavior by responding with, in effect, "But they totally started it!"

If it is, drink in the delicious irony of employing an argument most people would expect to hear from (but would not accept from) a misbehaving 7 year old to try to claim you aren't acting in a juvenile manner.

And he stuck with his middle name, too.

Leave his ethnicity out of it.

18. I'm sure that Sebelius would be glad for Kansas to get Louisiana's share.
Please, Piyush, please don't accept the money! There are other states out there that could really use it. California comes to mind -- and maybe even Texas, if Goodhair Perry is willing to accept the money.

If he takes one thin dime, he's a hypocrite.
If he doesn't, surely he'll be seen as an irresponsible partisan.

27. He is the only person
giving the gop's response to the SOTU. So he is the only person in that position. I call him Piyush because thats the name his parents gave him. He calls himself Bobby to make himself more palatable to white people in Louisiana. I think that fact should be public knowledge since he has made a career out of running for the next public office on the ladder. Call him what you want.

22. Also
In this morning's Baton Rouge newspaper, (I don't see it on the online version), was an article titled, "Group to Shun New Orleans over Evolution Law." Seems the Society for Interactive and Comparative Biology will NOT be holding its yearly convention in Louisiana due to way evolution is taught in its public schools. In a letter to Gov Jindal the group wrote, "It is the firm opinion of SICB's leadership that this law undermines the integrity of science and science education in Louisiana." Jindal would not comment.
