'Greenies' blamed for Australian firesPete Chagnon - OneNewsNow - 2/17/2009 6:20:00 AM
The editor for the Australian Conservative says the tragic brush fires in Australia can be partly blamed on the environmentalists or "greenies."
One of the worst brush fires in decades has ravished parts of Victoria, Australia. Authorities say more than 1,800 homes have been destroyed as well as over 150 lives lost and over 1,000 square miles of land scorched. Authorities have even designated some destroyed towns as crime scenes and suspect that arsonists have started some of the fires.
Australian Conservative editor John Styles says the Green Party is blaming the fires on so-called manmade global warming, and is calling for drastic political action to be taken to address the issue.
"Climate change has been an underlying theme of much of the coverage here," he notes. "The climate change lobby is extremely powerful and exerts tremendous influence. The vast majority of the Australian media are on the climate change bandwagon."
But Styles says the "greenies" are actually to blame for the destruction because their policies made it difficult for private citizens and forestry workers to clear underbrush. Styles adds that an article in the Australian supports that claim.
"The report went on to say that the Green groups...were pushing for changes to planning laws that included restrictions on the removal of vegetation and, worse still, the requirements for planting vegetation around and almost over houses as part of any planning permit to build a house in the shire of Nillumbik, so it gave the appearance on the outside of being in a forest," he explains. "Well, quite clearly, these policies should never have been implemented, and it was only the power of the Green lobby that had them implemented."
Reports claim that the fire spread so quickly that it outpaced humans and animals fleeing the flames. Other reports claimed that homeowners lost their houses because vegetation near the house literally exploded into flames and they could not fight the fires fast enough.
