Google Search for Barack Obama Reveals Racial Epithets
By Ed Oswald | Posted at 10:37 am on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

A reader tipped us off to the appearance of racial epithets in searches for Barack Obama on Google which are currently appearing. When performing a search for our current president, on the first screenful you’ll be greeted with the N-word. Yep, that one.

Apparently someone went into the Wikipedia entry for President Obama at about 11:44pm ET last night, deleting the entire entry to read the epithet three times over. The wording was in such a position that Google’s crawlers picked it up.

The edit was quickly reversed in two minutes, however it apparently was not fast enough for it not to be crawled by Google’s servers. Below is the screenshot. As this is a family site, the front page version has been edited. A uncensored version is posted after the fold.

Wikipedia, Google show Obama racial slur

Posted: Tuesday, February 17 2009 at 04:43 pm CT by Bob Sullivan
Web surfers who used Google.com to search for information on President Barack Obama on Tuesday afternoon were presented with a racial slur. The slur originated from Obama's Wikipedia entry, after a user had removed all content in Obama's entry and replaced it with three repeated words: a derogatory term for African-Americans.

Wikipedia.com's revision history records show that slur was only live for two minutes, with the Obama page edited to include the slur at 4:44 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (just before midnight ET) and the original content restored at 4:46.

But the slur lived on in Google search results. Anyone who Googled “Obama,” “Barack Obama,” or “President Barack Obama” was presented with a link to the Wikipedia reference page showing the racial slur , sometimes as high as the second result. It was removed about 4 p.m. ET after msnbc.com made inquiries to Google.

1. I wish that I could just ignore this, but there are some real
red flags here about some persons who cannot work within the context of a qualified person running this country because of his color. During this whole election I was concerned about race and gender issues. To hear things come out of people's mouth, you would think they never heard about the civil rights movement.

3. That's someone with very high privileges in Wiki
and a knowledge of exactly when Google crawls it.

And yet is dumb enough to pull a stunt like that. :eyes:

6. Obama's page has been semi protected for some time.
which means the vandal would have had to have been registered for at least four days and made at least ten edits to modify the page. That's a lot to go through simply to make an edit that's going to get you banned. Sad how some people select to use their time.
