Rodeo Day off, later in the month.

Seriously.

My nieces had to go to school on President's day, but they'll be off for Rodeo Day.

What a weird set of priorities.

1. Huh? I'm in the Dallas area. My kids got President's Day off. I don't even know when the hell
"Rodeo Day" is.

Thanks for the broad brush. :eyes:

4. Sorry.
I assumed that the state sets the calendar for the whole state, but obviously I was wrong. My relatives are in San Angelo, where Rodeo Day must be a big deal.

6. No problem. All school districts in Texas are referred to as "independent school districts" and
each set their own calendar (within specific parameters set by the state with regards to days per year, start day, etc.) All of the disticts in the DFW area (must be at least 15-20) have different calendars.

Most DFW districts had President's Day off. I heard that some used it as an "ice day" because schools closed a couple weeks ago due to ice.

:-)

8. The San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo
Probably generates a lot of money for the area, not to mention there are undoubtedly many school-age young ones that will be competing. Might as well give them the day off since they'll likely skip school to go.

20. Probably more interesting
to a 12 year old than sitting at home listening about a whole lot of dead guys.

7. When I lived in San Antonio we had 1/2 day off for Battle of the Flowers
parade but had to give up either 4th of July Memorial day (1/2) for the event.

Local issues, I think.

9. My husband teaches in a school district outside of Fort Worth
and the kids went to school on Monday but they do get a day off for the state fair in the fall. I grew up in another school district in the Fort Worth area and we also got "fair day" off

10. I went to high school in Tucson,
and we got Thursday and Friday off during Rodeo week. I can't remember when it was, maybe February -- high school was a LONG time ago. But the best part was that the first part of the week we could wear "Rodeo" clothes, which was the only time girls could wear jeans. I said it was a long time ago.

Rodeos are common in some parts of the country, and if they're a big enough deal, school might close. Heck, in Tucson we had a big rodeo parade, and elected a rodeo Queen and Princess for each grade. Wonder if they still do that?

12. When I was in 3rd grade they took our class to the rodeo
If you had a note from home, you could ride a heifer. (this was in like 1951 - imagine the school district allowing such a thing to happen today). I got a ribbon for not getting bucked off for 6 seconds or something.

The beginning and end of my rodeo career. The next year our rodeo field trip was rained out and then we moved and went to a different school that didn't give a shit about rodeo.

14. I believe the students in Livermore, California still get one or more days off for the rodeo.
It's a regional thing, popular wherever the rodeo is a big deal (and in some places, it's a REALLY big deal).

15. We get County Fair opening day.
All the high schools march in the opening parade so lots of kids would be out of school. It harkens back to the more rural days when everyone in the county participated in the fair, the rodeo, the stock show, whatever. It's the ISD working with the community.

17. Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Very large event.

They used to have it in the Astrodome.

They have Go Texan Day where kids in school and adults at work are expected to wear a western outfit, cowboy boots, or a cowboy hat.

It used to be called the Fat Stock Show. There are people that take a week off from work to go on a trail ride into Houston. They come down the frontage road of I-10 and camp overnight in Memorial Park.

I have lived in Texas my entire life and have never owned a cowboy hat, cowboy boots, or any kind of western outfit. So sue me.

18. One of my favorite things traveling in TX was the Kandinsky McDonalds.
We drove from Dallas down to Benham and every McDonalds we stopped at had Kandinsky's all over their dining room.

:)

19. Yeah, and in Kansas where I grew up,. . .
We didn't get 4th of July. We got Tornado Day. Every year on the 4th of July, we'd go to the basement and put our head between our legs and kiss our ass goodbye.

Unless you lived in a trailer, then you just had a nice picnic and lit firecrackers. It didn't really matter anyway. 4th of July was way more fun in the trailer park. Until your trailer blew away, but that hardly ever happened.

Seriously.
