Sojourner Truth Statue to be in Capitol - thanks to Hillary Clinton and Sheila Jackson Lee
"Celebrating Sojourner Truth – A 19th Century "No Limits" Abolitionist and Suffragette
Leecia Eve

Sojourner Truth was an extraordinary American hero, and thanks to the work of Hillary Clinton in the Senate and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in the House, Sojourner will finally be recognized with a statue in the Capitol -- the first African American woman to be so honored!

~snip~

"Introducing the Sojourner Truth legislation, Hillary said: "I am proud that finally a memorial to Sojourner Truth will take its rightful and permanent place in the heart of our representative government, the United States Capitol. For generations to come, visitors to our nation’s capitol will learn about her courage, perseverance and historic contribution in the face of incredible hardship. This is a fitting and long overdue tribute to a woman who deserves to be honored as a true American hero."

During Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and throughout the year, I hope each of us will carry a little bit of Sojourner Truth in our hearts and souls as she was clearly a woman who embodied the belief that there are no limits to what is possible."

1. Awwww. Now Clinton looooves black people....
Curious: What *specifically* did Clinton do, to bring this about?

2. Uh, she crafted the Senate legislation, and SJL did the same for the House.
You can't make it happen without legislation.

That's a rather large and seemingly uncomfortable chip you seem to have on your shoulder. Why the nasty attitude about Clinton?

3. Clinton also co-sponsored Lily Ledbetter legislation. And, the four republican women senators voted
yes on Lily Ledbetter.

When women support each other we win. Clinton and Jackson Lee deserve great credit for this. We need images and statues of women's achievements for our daughters to see and emulate. Things like this go along way to achieve gender equity.

8. I think it's a good thing for sons and fathers to see too.
Time to change a few paradigms, IMO. Past time, really.

It's a good think that Clinton and SJL did.

22. Lily Ledbetter was sponsored by Barbara Mikulski and had 54 co-sponsors

(HRC deserves credit on the statue - but nearly every Democrat in the Senate co-sponsored the Ledbetter act - and many of those Senators were male, but believe in equality. :) http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:SN181:

5. Hillary Clinton has been pushing for a Sojourner Truth monument
for years. You should do some research on it.

It makes me sick to see democrats acting with such irrational hatred against the Clintons. That derangement syndrome seems to be quite real and a very strange syndrome it is!

16. It was a great plot
Ms. Truth endorsed Clinton in one of Clinton's seaunces and in return Clinton and Clinton supporting Jackson Lee got the statue installed.

4. The speech:
"Wall, chilern, whar dar is so much racket dar must be somethin' out o' kilter. I tink dat 'twixt de niggers of de Souf and de womin at de Nork, all talkin' 'bout rights, de white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what's all dis here talkin''bout?

"Dat man ober dar say dat womin needs to be helped into carriages, and lifted ober ditches, and to hab de best place everywhar. Nobody eber helps me into carriages, or ober mud-puddles, or gibs me any best place!" And raising herself to her full height, and her voice to a pitch like rolling thunders, she asked "And a'n't I a woman? Look at me! Look at me! Look at my arm! (and she bared her right arm to the shoulder, showing her tremendous muscular power). I have ploughed, and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And a'n't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man—when I could get it—and bear de lash a well! And a'n't I a woman? I have borne thirteen chilern, and seen 'em mos' all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And a'n't I a woman?

"Den dey talks 'bout dis ting in de head; what dis dey call it?" ("Intellect," whispered some one near.) "Dat's it, honey. What's dat got to do wid womin's rights or nigger's rights? If my cup won't hold but a pint, and yourn holds a quart, wouldn't ye be mean not to let me have my little half-measure full?" And she pointed her significant finger, and sent a keen glance at the minister who had made the argument. The cheering was long and loud.

"Den dat little man in black dar, he say women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wan't a woman! Whar did your Christ come from?" Rolling thunder couldn't have stilled that crowd, as did those deep, wonderful tones, as she stood there with outstretched arms and eyes of fire. Raising her voice still louder, she repeated, "Whar did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothin' to do wid Him." Oh, what a rebuke that was to that little man.

Turning again to another objector, she took up the defense of Mother Eve. I can not follow her through it all. It was pointed, and witty, and solemn; eliciting at almost every sentence deafening applause; and she ended by asserting: "If de fust woman God ever made was strong enough to turn de world upside down all alone, dese women togedder (and she glanced her eye over the platform) ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now dey is asking to do it, de men better let 'em." Long-continued cheering greeted this. "Bleeged to ye for hearin' on me, and now old Sojourner han't got nothin' more to say."

Thanks for posting this. It's way long overdue. "No limits to what is possible" should be what we teach our daughters--a fine example.

20. When a statue to three other women who led on woman's rights
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 12:16 PM by karynnj
was put in the Senate rotunda, she was left out - likely because of racism - even though the carving with the other three had an unfinished part to accommodate a future woman. Here is link about that statue.

23. An interesting, related story -- Harriet Tubman statue for MD park
Shore artist's sculpture a tribute to Tubman

Salisbury man works to have piece installed at Dorchester County park

By Candice Evans • Staff Writer • February 9, 2009

SALISBURY -- In a seventh grade social studies class at Bennett Junior High, Richard Norman became fascinated by the Eastern Shore woman who led runaway slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Araminta Ross, better known as Harriet Tubman, was a leader of the abolitionist movement, as well as a nurse and spy for Union forces in the South.

"I was overcome with pride to know that such a person came from my home," said the 43-year-old Salisbury resident. "I wanted to learn more about her."

Norman's family visited the place of Tubman's birth, Bucktown, which has an historical marker erected by the Maryland Civil War Centennial Commission in her honor.

"I couldn't help but feel that the words on the marker were too brief to do justice to her life," he said.
