GOP governors consider turning down stimulus money
BATON ROUGE, La. – A handful of Republican governors are considering turning down some money from the federal stimulus package, a move opponents say puts conservative ideology ahead of the needs of constituents struggling with record foreclosures and soaring unemployment.

Though none has outright rejected the money available for education, health care and infrastructure, the governors of Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alaska, South Carolina and Idaho have all questioned whether the $787 billion bill signed into law this week will even help the economy.

"My concern is there's going to be commitments attached to it that are a mile long," said Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who considered rejecting some of the money but decided Wednesday to accept it. "We need the freedom to pick and choose. And we need the freedom to say 'No thanks.'"

1. Cool! Split their states' share among the rest of our states.
We can definitely use the money in New Mexico.

eagerly,
Bright

4. Good ... they shouldn't
take money when they're opposed to the plan. Let them "put their money where their big mouths are" and their reputations on the line .... let the voters decide.

9. Sad thing about it -
a lot of residents will suffer from it. I just got laid off and won't get an increase/extension of unemployment benefits or help with COBRA. :-(

17. It may cause people to move where the jobs are
That would shift the census wouldn't it? It would also be a very clear message to those who say 'no thanks' while the people in their states suffer.

20. It would uproot my family -
this is home; my children grew up here and go to school here. My SO works for the government here. Moving out of Texas for a job or because the Governor is a dick wouldn't be good for my family.

18. The stimulus package can't stimulate
relevance for the repub party. No matter how many ways they try to make it work, it's just not gonna happen.

7. Try And Eat "Principal"
First of all...as we've seen too many times with repugnicans, what they say isn't what they do. They find backdoors and other ways to pretend they're being "fiscally conservative" while taking the money other ways. A good example are "user fees". Nope, they're not taxes, they're "fees". It's all in the semantics.

11. To the barricades!
That's what it may take for these clowns to get it. Meanwhile, they're destroying their party and their futures. The sad thing is that many of their constituents will suffer for the ignorance of these idiots.

might as well stand up for what you believe in, and give the people exactly what they voted for.

13. Nothing but political grandstanding
These idiots think that if the economy completely fails they will be able to regain control of Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012.

They will sink the ship so they can become the captains.

15. Yep, every last one of them will grub for every dime they can get
This isn't even cheap grandstanding; it's intended to scare hell out of people while pandering to their supposed base. When they turn around and grab all they can, they're hoping that the people they scared so badly will feel kindly toward them.

Think about it, though. When someone scares you, I mean really makes your heart leap into your throat, dumping a load of adrenaline into your system, and then leaves you with no outlet or recourse when they say "Gotcha!" what is your first instinct? It sure as the world isn't, "Oh ho ho, you trickster!" with back slaps and hearty grins. No, you want that person in pain, quickly and severely.

This is a big miscalculation by these governors. And there's no sense interrupting them while they're making a big mistake.

14. That's my Dumbass Governor (Perry) - Mr. 39%. He'll take the cash.
He's trying to sound like a Big Swinging Dick to the morons in the Confederate States Party.
But, he's just a Big Dick.

He'll take the money in the end. Asshole.
