Ante up! SC judge rules Texas Hold 'em is a skill
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- A South Carolina judge has ruled that Texas Hold 'em poker is a game of skill, a ruling that could affect how the state's law enforcement treats the game.

Mount Pleasant Municipal Judge Larry Duffy on Thursday wrote that there is "overwhelming" evidence that the card game is one of skill, not chance.

State law outlaws gambling on games of chance with cards or dice.

Duffy's order doesn't help the case of five men he found guilty of operating a gambling house, who must now pay fines.

About 20 people were arrested in a raid almost three years ago. The others settled their cases by paying fines.

1. Absolutely, poker of any kind is a game of skill.
The guy who knows how to deal off the bottom will win every time.

But seriously, folks, winning strategies are based on calculating odds, remembering what cards have been exposed, interpreting the behavior of other players, etc. Poker skills are very complex and sophisticated.

2. Ahhhh yes, the people in SC SAY you will burn in hell for gambling,
drinking, smoking pot, and all those other evil devil deeds, but sometimes they do get creative when judging themselves.

When we lived there, almost all my neighbors condemned anyone for dring "the devil's brew" (beer), but the guys who picked up the trash would laugh and say "you should see all the cans in THEIR trash bags!!!!"

3. On line gambling?
I would like to see it legalized. People who gamble are going to gamble whether it's legal or not. It's kinda like sex...if you can't get it here, you go there.

Think of how much tax they could have collected on the $200 million I have made on online poker sites! Of course, they might have trouble spending play money!
