North Dakota House Passes Egg-as-Person Bill
:puke: :puke: :puke:

On Tuesday, one body of North Dakota's state legislature voted, 51-41, not only to ban abortion, but to define life as beginning at conception. Such a measure, considered extreme even by pro-life standards, would have far-reaching consequences on women's health.

State Rep. Dan Ruby introduced the legislation, which declares that "for purposes of interpretation of the constitution and laws of North Dakota, it is the intent of the legislative assembly that an individual, a person, when the context indicates that a reference to an individual is intended, or a human being includes any organism with the genome of homo sapiens."

3. This will end in vitro and contraception
All the little frozen zygotes will now be 'people' and it will be mass murder to either not implant all of them or to dispose of them. They will have to be implanted while fresh and able to develop. So anyone needing in vitro will only be able to fertilize as many eggs as they will want to become babies even if the chance of just one or 2 zygotes implanting and developing is slim. So why will anyone even bother?

Contraception that prevents an embryo from attaching to the uterus after fertilization? No way. You would be committing murder by preventing this one cell from implanting and maturing. I presume every woman using birth control could be put in jail for manslaughter.

Of course this is the purpose of the bill.

4. Strictly speaking, that would be zygote-as-person
Otherwise, every woman in menses would be guilty of felony murder. Otherwise, I feel your disgust.

7. Yes -- and the ovum is made VALUABLE AND HUMAN instantly when struck by a sperm.
The Rethugs are thinking "fertilized egg," I'm sure, but they don't know big words like "zygote."

Note that the post-fertilization period (the 40 weeks in the womb of the egg-provider) counts for absolutely nothing. The personhood of the egg consists of it's having been impacted by a sperm.

Which is why laws should not be made by rich fat old white men with Viagra prescriptions in their wallets.

6. miscarriage
I wonder how long until a woman is charged with murder or manslaughter for having a miscarriage that is in some way tied to her behavior, not eating right, working out, anything that could contribute to miscarriage.

10. You're not only a murderer, you're a torturer!
You couldn't just have hard-boiled the poor little North Dakotans, or had them sunny side up. You had to go and scramble them! You cruel, cruel beast!

12. I nominate the 51 legislators to have state monitored videocams in their bedrooms.
The only way to really protect these zygote-citizens is to know when they are created. Lets recommend these folks to be the 1st to have the camera's installed (for monitoring purposes only, of course) in their bedrooms. To work the kinks out of the program....

15. Just wanted to say that not all North Dakotans are this ass backward
Sorry for my state.

I like living in Fargo. We are a fairly progressive college town.

It just goes to hell once you leave this city though. Hope this gives you guys a little insight on what it's like to live in this part of the country. I feel like I'm in the TV show Green Acres sometimes.

20. *If* this bill passes:
Will legislators be increasing welfare funding? I mean, if an egg is considered a *person* then wouldn't they theoretically be eligible for welfare benefits (that the the parents could apply for on their behalf)?

Oh, wait a minute, probably not!

21. Naturally, not a murmur about this....
... in the male-dominated corporate media.

I often wonder why women still live in states like North or South Dakota.
