1. EXCELLENT.
We were watching the news this morning, and they said the SEC denied they were searching for him. I go "yeah, but I bet the FBI is."

Good job, G-men.

22.  I'm not sure that they could have kept it quiet.

The good thing is that they probably took his passport if they consider him a flight risk.

17. It's a civil case at this point, not a criminal case.
I expect that'll change in time, though.

25. It's all a matter of process.
I'd be stunned of a criminal indictment isn't forthcoming in the next month or two.

Where in the World Is R. Allen Stanford?

Updated 12:35 p.m.

As the scandal surrounding the Stanford Group continues to grow, no one seems to know where to find R. Allen Stanford, the cricket-loving billionaire at the center of the story — not even his father, apparently.

James Stanford, who is 81, told The Houston Chronicle on Wednesday that he didn’t know where his son might be. He said he spoke to Stanford fils last week, at which time he mentioned “problems with the business climate in general, but nothing of this magnitude.”

The magnitude of the problem appears to be about $8 billion: That is the size of the fraud that the Securities and Exchange Commission suspects Mr. Stanford’s Houston-based firm and its Antigua-based affiliate might have carried out. The firm’s Antigua affiliate had offered certificates of deposit with what the S.E.C. thinks were suspiciously generous returns.

Mr. Stanford, a former Texas real estate developer who now lives on the island of St. Croix, has been named in a civil suit by the S.E.C.

But he isn’t facing criminal charges at the moment. And authorities don’t seem to be in a great hurry to track him down.

“As of right now, all we are doing is an ongoing investigation to monitor his holdings, for lack of a better term, and we are not actively pursuing him,” James Sullivan, the United States marshal for the Virgin Islands, told The Associated Press.

Panicky investors might like a word with Mr. Stanford, however. Since the fraud suit was filed, they have reportedly been turned away as they sought to withdraw their assets from Stanford banks in Antigua and Venezuela.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is referring questions about the Stanford Group to its Web site, stanfordfinancialreceivership.com.

As of Thursday morning, there weren’t too many answers to be had. The site’s “FAQ” page was empty.

Update: Antigua’s prime minister, Winston Baldwin Spencer, was asked Wednesday night if Mr. Stanford was on the island. He told Bloomberg News: “I don’t know, but I don’t think so.”
