The coach never considered any other option.

It didn't matter that his DeKalb, Ill., High School basketball team had ridden a bus two and a half hours to get to Milwaukee, then waited another hour past game time to play. Didn't matter that the game was close, or that this was a chance to beat a big city team.

Something else was on Dave Rohlman's mind when he asked for a volunteer to shoot two free throws awarded his team on a technical foul in the second quarter. His senior captain raised his hand, ready to go to the line as he had many times before.

Only this time it was different.

"You realize you're going to miss them, don't you?" Rohlman said.

Darius McNeal nodded his head. He understood what had to be done.

4. I think both of them did just that...
I think Coach Rohlman and Darius McNeal tried their very best at being really good people. I also think they were outstandingly successful.

This is a story I wish would be blared across every headline, paper, electronic, TV or radio in the country. They are HEROES!

18. Wow. Just, wow. Your responses are...I don't even know.
Basketball may be just a stupid game, and I wouldn't have a problem if the kid did try and make the free throws awarded for the technical, instead the Coach and the kid both went above and beyond their "best" in the game of life.

I have seen some pitiful replies, none ignore worthy until now. Feel free to reciprocate if you desire.

Wow.

6. they were given 2 technical fouls because one of the player's mother died
and the player wasn't listed to play. When the player decided at the last minute to join the team they had to add his name and rules required a technical foul be given. The other team did not want to take advantage of the fact that the boy's mother had died.

It didn't have anything to do with not trying their hardest.

8. Oh FFS
One team was awarded two free throws because of a single technical foul committed by another team.

I wish people who didn't know what the hell they were talking about would just step away from their computers and not post bullshit.

10. lol right they were alowed 2 shots for a single technical foul
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 07:09 PM by grantcart
how is that in anyway relevant to correcting the repliers odd response and is your outrage threshold so low that you explode with expletives on what is basically a semantic error?

On edit; you are the original replier - so you think one team should get a 2 point advantage simply because one of the players mother died?

28. Yup,
and me thinks I got a nasty gram, but hard to tell......

But, the question I would ask is....

It's a heartwarming story of some kids doing something nice for some other kids who were dealing with a tragic event.... Why does this have to become a issue that raises so much anger in at least one person.

19. Pop culture reference from the movie Stripes
Pop culture reference from the movie Stripes-- a young recruit was getting pissed off and hostile at things that were absurd to get hostile or pissed off about. One of his petty and petulant whines was, "My name is Francis, but if you call me that, I'll kill you" to which the the reply was "lighten up, Francis."

Petulance, thy name is Francis.

I wouldn't necessarily consider Stripes an obscure movie, but maybe to some people it very well is. Regardless, it's a quote that appears quite often on DU in a variety of contexts.

Either way, I was simply answering a question posed rather than playing someone's projected game.

40. I imagine that High School sports programs...
I imagine that High School sports programs, like drama programs, music programs and other extracurricular activities are all part and parcel of the fundamental quest to instill in the students concepts such as team-work, discipline, and integrity in a venue that the particular student enjoys and/or values.

And it would appear that, at least in this instance, it paid off. Rather dramatically, I might add...
