But I'm going to go out on a limb here, probably both dating myself and revealing my un-hip, less-than-cool background...

What did she say at the very end when she made the sideways peace sign? I couldn't understand her. Also, what did the hand gesture really mean?

but what she said sounded like "Peace out! Rachel". The sideways peace sign I think is the hip-hop way of giving the peace sign, like the hip-hop way of pointing a pistol is to hold it sideways instead of the normal vertical position.

She didn't mean anything by this other than a goof on the new Republican hip-hop strategy. She was probably thinking of the absurdity of someone like Lindsey Graham (or any Republican congressperson) trying to appeal to hip-hoppers. The whole notion is whacked and she was just having fun with it.

This was the first time I've seen her. From what you said, she must be on semi-regularly. I liked her and look forward to seeing her on again.

I was laughing as Melissa did this, knowing she was having fun with it. She did say something earlier about being "1st generation hip-hop" or something like that.

The sideways peace sign makes sense, as does "Peace out." The only part I understood, though, was when she said "Rachel."

She is on regularly, and is a favorite commentator of mine. She's an extremely bright woman and a university professor, with the bonus features of lots of personality and wit -- much like Rachel herself in that respect.

We'll be seeing lots more of Dr. Melissa Harris-Lacewell, I'm sure.

There's always the possibility that Coach Lacewell is a great uncle or 7th cousin or something, though.

Of course, we're all related to each other in one way or another, similar last names or not. :D
