Ex-Sen. John Warner to be made an honorary British knight

Former Sen. John Warner will be made an honorary knight by Queen Elizabeth II, the British ambassador announced today.

Warner is being recognized for his outstanding service over many years in strengthening relations between the two countries, particularly in the area of defense, a news release said.

The award was announced Wednesday at a dinner in Warner’s honor at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. Guests included U.S. Sens. Jim Webb and Chuck Robb, National Security Advisor Gen. Jim Jones, Gen. David Petraeus, former Gen. Colin Powell, Gen. James Conway, Gen. William Fraser, former British Defence Secretary Des Browne and Lord Inge, the former British chief of defence staff.

British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald said in the news release that Warner has been a “constant and unstinting friend of the United Kingdom, working with us on issues ranging from defence cooperation to the Northern Ireland peace process.”

Warner and his wife, Jeanne, each share an ancestral lineage to the United Kingdom, the news release said. Jeanne Warner was born in London and an ancestor of the former senator, Alexander Stuart, had a royal connection.
