Poll: GOP Leadership’s Numbers In Toilet

If you dig into the new Research 2000 weekly tracking poll, you’ll find some really rough numbers for GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and John Boehner.

McConnell’s favorability rating is twenty three percent, and his unfavorability rating is fifty one percent. Boehner’s fave rating is seventeen percent, and his unfave is fifty four percent. The Congressional GOP’s fave rating is eighteen percent.

By contrast, Nancy Pelosi is in the forties, and Harry Reid is in the thirties.

And a quick look at the broader picture suggests that the GOP leadership has sunken in popularity since mid-January, when President Obama took office, suggesting once again that the performance of GOP leaders in the big stimulus debate has hurt them. The Dems have held steady or risen a bit.

Their favorability ratings today, with the mid-January numbers in parentheses:

* Mitch McConnell’s favorability rating: 23% (28%)

* John Boehner: 17% (20%)

* Congressional Republicans: 18% (25%)

Meanwhile, here are the Dems’ numbers:

* Barack Obama: 69% (68%)

* Nancy Pelosi: 43% (40%)

* Harry Reid: 33% (32%)

* Congressional Democrats 41% (38%)

As always, the caveat here is that the GOP’s strategy is premised upon the idea that in the long run, the public will come to see the stimulus package as a failure, which is to say, the Republican strategy is a long-term one. Still, these numbers are pretty dismal.

7. But are those poll numbers from their respective
states/districts or just a general poll? Because if the voters in Boner's district think the world of him, it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks of him.

If the economy has turned around by the next mid-term elections the GOP could be facing a disaster.

11. Gallup Poll Numbers

Gallup ran a recent poll that had approval ratings for Democrats and Republicans in Congress. The Democrat approval rating was up 25% from 18% to 43%. while Republican approval was down 4% from 23% to 19%. The poll was taken right after all the Republicans all voted no on the stimulus bill.
