Here in the northwest suburbs of Detroit, we have many houses IDENTICAL to that.

It's a pretty standard plan that was built in the late 40s and early 50s ... part of the post-WW2 GI Bill housing boom. In Berkley (adjacent to Royal Oak) where I went to grade school, that house would go for approximately $175,000-$200,000 depending on condition and upgrades. Berkley, except for mixed soning highways, is fairly uniform in housing prices and has become a preferred residential community - good schools and decent civic/commercial policies. Solidly middle class, it's low end white collar and upper end blue collar. In parts of Royal Oak and Madison Heights where there are IDENTICAL houses, it'd go anywhere from $130,000 to $180,000, depending on the neighborhood and its condition. Those cities are more variable and heterogeneooous.

Now, this is Oakland County. It's one of the wealther counties in the country, despite Michigan's economic woes. Thus, housing isn't falling quite as fast, but it's been on the decine for about 18 months. Prices are down about 10% (+/-some) from the highs.

In real life, it has nothing to do with a potential market sale price. Since I am unfamiliar with Cleveland residential real estate, I could not put a potential value on it for selling. But it is worth more than $26,000 on the open market.

I really doubt that. My parents spent ~$75k in a decent suburb of SE MI, around 20 years ago. Now, it's appraised at around $180k. Granted, the economy in this area is shit, and I doubt it'll sell right away, but I doubt $26 thousand is enough to buy a house in a trailer park.

That house, even in the lowest priced real estate areas will be worth around 80 grand. Ohio, like MI has taken a hit with the economy, but I'd seriously be surprised if you could find an actual house that cheap.

Either way, it's obvious he doesn't have tons of money and hasn't lived extravagantly. He's the closest to anyone running of living a middle class lifestyle. He's not my candidate, but he seems like genuinely decent guy and probably understands the concerns of working class people quite well in his area. He doesn't live in a nice gated community off in the suburbs (nothing really wrong with that either though as far as I'm concerned).

I also have to say I love his quote about ownership. When Bush talks about an ownership society, he speaks of the rich basically owning everything and everybody for that matter. With Kucinich you get a real sense of sincerity.

In America, politics has become an upper-class profession. You need to at least be an "honorary" member of the upper class to be considered credible.

Buying your way into high office through revolving door kickbacks by going in and out of public life and pimping speaking fees counts, as long as you end up with lots of money.

Otherwise you are considered a "washout" by virtue of not having been able to profit off of your political career. That is how most journalists see it.

Merely being upper-middle-class by virtue of academia or other profession doesn't cut it, unless you make lots of money.
