The Aegis Trust is seeking to recruit two new positions for a new
programme – 'Wanted for War Crimes'. The 3 year programme is funded
by the European Union and will pay competitive salaries. The
positions are based in London with extensive travel overseas.
The Programme
The programme has two objectives:
1.
The primary objective is to create a network of NGOs,
investigators, lawyers and other groups willing to share information
and evidence about people suspected of war crimes, torture, crimes
against humanity or genocide; helping to build prima-facie cases
against a suspect so that national police and investigators can
quickly obtain an arrest warrant or make an extradition request.This part of the programme consists of:
- the creation of an informal network of other investigators, NGOs,
émigré communities, police forces and lawyers;
- the building of a database and website which enables the sharing of
information and evidence relevant to the arrest and prosecution of suspects;
- the creation of case files on suspects which can be used in
different jurisdictions;
- training of activists in different countries in how to present
evidence suitable for use in other jurisdictions;
- the use of private information sharing and, on occasion, public
media campaigns to work towards the arrest or extradition of suspects
- liaising with prosecuting authorities, to ensure that the varying
concerns of prosecuting authorities are known and understood by the
network to ensure maximum chances of success in future prosecutions.
2. A secondary objective is to work with a wide coalition of groups
and actors willing to pressure UN member states, the Security
Council, the European Union and, through these institutions, other
Governments, to arrest suspects for whom the international criminal
court and tribunals have issued arrest warrants.
