Former Maine prosecutor faces child porn charges

Tue Feb 17, 5:05 pm ET
BANGOR, Maine – Maine's former top drug prosecutor pleaded not guilty Tuesday to federal child pornography charges.
James Cameron, 46, of Westland, Mich., turned himself in to federal marshals in Bangor after being indicted last week by a federal grand jury. He is charged with 16 counts of transporting, receiving and possessing child pornography between July 2006 and January 2008.
He is accused of uploading images of child pornography to an Internet site using five screen names and of transmitting images of child pornography using an online chat and file-sharing service.
Cameron's bail was set at $75,000, with conditions that he be released to his brother's custody in Michigan, wear an electronic monitor and have limited access to the Internet. The government had sought to have him held without bail.

--snip--

I wonder how many people he put in prison for a little weed?

1. I done figured it out.
Mere proles are way too busy and scared to mess with kiddie porn. That leaves the "good stuff"(as if) field wide open for the connected and officialdom.

Crafty strategy.

But you know what I find really dismaying about ANY porn? I already know the ending. Every time. Just takes the fun right out of it. *sigh*

"A federal grand jury in Bangor returned a 16-count indictment charging James M. Cameron, 46, with transporting, receiving and possessing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby announced in a release Tuesday. "
http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/039894.html

"Bail for Cameron, who now lives in Westland, Mich., was set at $75,000. He must be released to his brother's custody, wear an electronic monitor and have limited use of the Internet."

"Rodway told the judge that Cameron left his wife and children and went to live with his brother at his home in suburban Detroit, Mich., about a year ago after his home computers were seized by Maine State Police in December 2007. The investigation into whether Cameron had downloaded child pornography triggered a possible inquiry by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, the defense attorney said, and Cameron moved to Michigan, his native state."

"Cameron served as an assistant attorney general in Augusta until the investigation by the Maine State Police became public last spring. If convicted, he faces five to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000.

Portland defense lawyer Peter Rodway said Cameron is relieved at the chance to rebut the charges. "It's our position that he never knowingly possessed or transported child pornography," Rodway said.

U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby said the case could go to trial in June. "

To his defense comes, "Jeralyn E. Merritt is criminal defense attorney in Denver representing persons accused of serious federal and state offenses. She served as one of the principal trial lawyers for Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City Bombing Case." of "Talk Left." http://www.talkleft.com/story/2009/2/18/04140/5132

So he's back in Michigan, right after being charged and his family stays in Maine.

3. U.S. Attorney Paula Silsby
Silsby is a Bush holdover. Her civilian offices are just down the road from me.

Cameron was fired for something other than this which probably came to light during the kiddie-porn investigation. I find it interesting that he wasn't charged until after President Obama was sworn in.

I think the dynamics of this may be more complex than may first appear on the surface.
