Who here other than me does not care about the high tech world

I just have an old computer and a cell phone to make calls and a handfull of CD's and casette tapes and an old car. I have no idea nor do I care what twittering is or face book or any of that what I would call crap.

I am 60 and I just can't find one bit of interest in any of it.

I thought at the time when I was young that my parents were out of it an only because of the music , just about everything else had not changed at all.

I suppose people who have children and grand kids have more of a reason to get involved.

I know everyone on this forum has a computer that is a given.

Am I alone in this thinking?

1. I'm the same age but I LOVE computers, even though I have no kids.

Got a couple of Macs, an iPhone, an iPod, all that stuff. I don't have any particular use for Facebook or Twitter, but I know what they are and can see how some people might find them entertaining. But I love the Internet, use it all the time for damn near everything, especially shopping and banking. Even my 89-year-old dad spends a lot of time with his computer, scanning in old photos and net-surfing. You may not be alone but I suspect you are in the minority. Gotta get with the 21st century, dude...

2. Yeah, pretty much.

It's a step in our evolution.
We are keeping more and more of our daily lives outside of our brains.
It's extra storage for our memories, and new ways to communicate.
Every generation goes through what you are experiencing, on some level.
Things get bigger, faster, and weirder as we progress.
Don't worry too much though, in long run, you're not missing all that much...

Truthfully.... I'm a teacher and I think kids were more motivated learners before all this technology highjacked their brains! Kids today have no attention span. No wonder... books and homework are boring!

except for Facebook because our youngest son is in Afghanistan and uses it to stay connected with the family back home. Gave up taking pictures of family events, sports activities of grandkids because the technology gets in the way of enjoying the event.

I'm finding more and more that I'm enjoying less and less because someone always has a camera in my face to capture whatever event and post to LJ, FB, MySpace, etc. Same with going to shows, etc. -- many seem more interested in snapping pics for their journals than the actual performance. I know a number of artists have been somewhat vocal about this.

8. I can take it or leave it.

If a tune is good it doesn't matter if I listen to it on cassette, CD or MP3. The same with a movie, I don't really care about the platform I watch it on, I just want to watch a good movie.

As for facebook, well DU is my facebook - again for me it's about quality content, not the bells and whistles.

I own three cd's.

That was me up until a couple of years ago. I had to make some changes, which included a nice new stinking truck. And to be honest all I want to do is get rid of everything and find a place by a creek, and a big garden.

None of it is worth a shit in comparison to silence.

I never had a lot of stuff and what I did have I got rid of other than the three guitars I made. I have some sort of portable CD player that uses an adapter for my old cars cassette deck and the few CD's hanging around there somewhere.

I just never got interested in the new tech stuff and didn;t see that they made much difference , a cassette sounds as good to me as a CD and the computer was my wifes idea not mine . i only used it for selling crap or the lost cause of a job search. We only got the cell phones because our land line kept going out for weeks at a time. it was all connected through cable and all sorts of shit which Ih had no idea about. The phone co always insisted it was needed to come out here for a fee and check the wires , I told them the damn wires are here and fine I can see them and it turned out it was some arial cable that needed to be replaced and that was when we had airtouch analog and all we have done since was be forced to upgrade to digital phones which we still have the first one.

I can't keep up with the changes and even if I could afford to I would pass on it all. we still use VHS . This computer is over 10 years old .

26. I want to go back.

I'll admit that I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I recently bought a laptop, but that's because I haven't had electricity for over a year, and I wanted to listen to music. I stream radio. So I'm out on my tractor with headphones, listening to college radio. But I also have the most highly advanced mountain bike in the world. I love bikes. I hate this modern world. There is so much that I see that almost no one else sees. In fact tonight I finally came up with a phrase that works. I am highly selective about what I put in my ears. I know this is about Twitter, and facebook and all of that. But there is so much wrong in our communities that most people don't even experience. The noise. Just the noise. It's driving me insane. I have just spent the last twenty years buying and selling house, farms, ranches, all to find a home. And only two of those were silent. I think all of this high speed crap is a way of keeping people occupied so they don't actually experience their own disappointment.

But I'm a hypocrite because I'm now finally in the process of building my own house. Something I despise. I reached my limit. I couldn't find a place to call home. And combined with the real estate market, and the fact that I would rather take all of my money and put it into actual objects rather than digits in a bank, I'm going to put up a house. A very cool house. All steel. Steel beams.

Sorry. I'm blabbing. But I'm highly disappointed. One last thing. I think I know what happened. We're the specie that didn't know when to stop. Thanks for listening, if you made it this far. :)

13. Personally I don't care about the high tech world either. I have

a basic 5 year old computer and 5 year old cell phone. As long as they work, I'm happy. Although I'm ecstatic for the high tech world for my son's sake. He's an Apple developer with the Safari program, so the techier things get, the better for him. But I guess he's a small part of the reason that things are so techy. He definitely did not get that part of his smarts from me!

I don't ever expect anyone to agree with me on anything. I just look for peoples opinions and to see where I fit into the madness.

When I had a job at ford everyone there kept telling me I should get a new car or showed me their 5th new cell phone for that year or told me I should upgrade to the next windows version but everything I had then and still have works just like it did and still works for me.

I know people like new things and the latest and fastest but I'm not in that much of a rush.

My old walkman cassette deck still plays the tapes. I do realize that I can't carry 1,000 songs with me but I can't think of 1,000 songs I'd want to take along.

I've tried a message board but it went by so fast I walked away from that and I would rather talk than text.

I'm happy to know we're in the same age group with somewhat different views after having traveled, I'm sure, some of the same paths getting to here. The important thing I've learned in life is contentment and without it I'm not sure I'd still be somewhat sane.

I like to see what people say about it but I don't need to run down the 100 steps they took to get to their conclusion. Maybe I'm just impatient.

My IPod is great but I didn't need to read 50 articles or see ten ads or go to 25 websites to buy one. I may buy a Kindle because it sounds like they have the kinks out of it and like it would be really convenient but I'm not going to kill myself reading reviews. I'm your age. I have a 4-year-old computer, which is supplied by my company (because I work from home via internet), and a basic camera/cell phone. That's it.

I use:

Networking pages. In a very limited and focused way.

Skype. For outgoing phone calls that would be more costly by cell phone.

On-line photo albums.

On-line calendar and email reminders.

I do not blog or use Twitter. No need or interest.

A notebook computer is at the top of my wish list so I can travel more and take work with me, and not be limited by scheduled vacation days.

Having a computer also has eliminated the need for multiple other electronic devices. I do not have:
-Television, radio, CD/DVD players. Need eliminated by computer.
-Landline telephone. Need eliminated by cell phone and internet.
-Clocks/watches/alarms. Need eliminated by cell phone and computer.
-Car. Need eliminated by city living.

I love that technology has nearly eliminated my need/use of paper.
-I write one check a month for the rent because that's what the landlord wants; bills are otherwise paid on line.

- Only 3 elderly relatives get dead-tree greeting cards because of their limited computer access/appreciation; everyone else gets e-cards.

- I don't buy newspapers or magazines; all the information I want/need is available on line.

My one paper "need" is books. I like to read in bed at night and a real book in my hands is part of that experience; however, I do buy most of them used.

Computer technology has changed our world and the way we interact, communicate, and do business. I do think this is, for the most part, pretty fantastic.

I got a degree in mechanical engineering. And after going full circle, I just want the simple stuff. I saw a BBC news spot on the poppy fields in I forget where. But when I saw this remote village in the mountains, I realized these supposedly poor people had what only millionaires can afford over here. Do you know how hard I've searched for ranches over the years? To find a place with privacy and solitude requires millions. And here were these people simply living off the land. Perhaps not like paradise, but definitely not like some slurb in Oklahoma. Well, it made sense when I saw it. Maybe not on some internet forum like this. :)

I'm also not very interested in high technology, though I at least try to stay somewhat modern.

I'm a scientist, so I have to keep up with advances in tecnology in terms of genetics and biology methods and instruments.

In my personal life, I like my computer. Mostly because I love playing videogames. Every now and then I'm forced to buy new things in order to keep playing video games (if they kept making videogames for my system, then I wouldn't). Other than that, though, I hate all forms of communication, including email and phones and texting (which I've done once in my life). The only reason I like DU is that nobody know me for shit so nobody expects me to really respond.....I can do so at my leisure so it doesn't feel like communication. I don't have any fancy new tv, or car, or appliance, or anything except an occasional upgrade of my comp (which I can do myself).

I like talking to people face to face. I feel uncomfortable communicating any other way.

I have a computer. Period. No cell phone. No nothing else. Land line phone is the only phone that works in a power outage so we have that. Also have a fax machine to fax in grocery orders.
