Has military recruitment stepped up a notch in this country?
My 18 year old son has received two calls from a US Marine recruiter just today with one yesterday. He is of age and can decide for himself. I realize we need to protect our country but right now I see no benefit in him joining the service.

The recruiters have been calling on our land line and we have caller I.D. So I called back and told them to stop calling period.

I do not wish to insult any current or former military members of DU. I honor all that serve....but... joining the military is still voluntary.

If for some reason they call again I will say the following.

"Your Commander and Chief for the last 8 years is a traitor and war criminal. He and his administration was the very thing you are suppose to protect our country from and the very thing my relatives shed their blood fighting. I do not support my son joining the military until George Bush, Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld are tried for war crimes including torture! If you harass me one more time the next call you receive will be from my lawyer!"

And I ain't just whistling Dixie!

1. Just tell them to stop calling...
insulting the ex-Presidential-like object or threatening them with lawyers won't impress them in the least.

If the kid's getting that many calls from the recruiter, I suspect they may have been talking already. Not that the kid actually made plans to sign up, but it doesn't take much to get a recruiter to think he's got a fish on the hook.

No! No! No! and NO! It's a pain, but you can't put them on the no-call list and just have to wait for them to give up.

(It's been like this for years for 18 year olds-- recruiters love to cruise the high schools looking fopr victims, and the high schools love to have them)

5. I can stop them from calling using a lawyer. The phone number they're
using to call him is not his. I have used the law to stop several things unrelated to this in the past. That is what our taxes are for and our Constitution is for. I'm not a lawyer hater as some folks tend to be. I used the service of one just 2 weeks ago and I am glad I did. I do not make threats just promises.

I know many military folks that agree with me in every respect politically, ethically and morally. Freedom is what they die for. The military is about respect. I will not stand for someone using there military uniform to bully anyone, ever.

That is why fascism is worth defeating.

2. Explain to your son....
that if he enlists in the Marines, you'll wait until he's asleep and shoot his right big toe off.

Told that to my son. Meant it.

Wish my parents had told me that.

4. I joined the Marines in 1961...
Feel free to quote me if he decides to do the same:

"You'll beee SOOOORRRRRY!!!" Which I was unfortunate enough to hear when I emerged from the PC that carried my dumb ass to MCRD in San Diego.

6. "It'll be a learning experience."
(I felt like breaking his jaw.)

7. Thank you for your comment. I lost many friends in Vietnam.
It kinda messed with me mentally as a young person. I have a hard time being close to anyone but my immediate family because I have a major fear of losing them.
