Daniel Radcliffe: I'm a Fag Hag

Harry Potter and Equus actor Daniel Radcliffe says in a new interview that he grew up surrounded by gay men and that "when you know a gay guy has a crush on you it is the most flattering thing."

The Daily Beast's Kevin Sessums interviews Radcliffe:

Kevin Sessums: "What's it been like working in the small bower world of the theatre? It's a very different environment than film. Much more collegial and camp and...well, let's face it...gay."

Daniel Radcliffe: "And for a lot of straight guys - and I know I'm guilty of it sometimes - when you know a gay guy has a crush on you it is the most flattering thing."

Kevin Sessums: "Forgive me, but to be politically incorrect here, I've seldom met a straight actor who is not a 'fag hag.' Are you?"

Daniel Radcliffe: "Oh, yeah. I know I definitely caught it. Absolutely. My mom was a casting director and my dad was a literary agent and I was surrounded by gay men from a very young age. And I was the only boy in my class at school who had that kind of relationship with gay men. Most of my friends had parents who had proper jobs in banks and law firms so none of them had been exposed to homosexuality in the way I had - as a normal course of things. So they had a rather different attitude toward it than I."

Kevin Sessums: "They'd just bugger each other."

Daniel Radcliffe: "Well, I didn't go to a boarding school if that's what you're getting at. That's one thing Harry Potter has done if nothing else. It has restored the reputation of the English boarding school. It has made it something other than a hotbed of homosexuality. Every time a new Harry Potter book comes out, the numbers at English boarding schools go up."

5. I won't use that "f" word at all, but...

...about 20+ years ago when I was working in sales in midtown Manhattan, I had a presentation early one morning at a restaurant that was owned by a group of gay guys.

Knowing that I'm a straight (but not narrow) guy, these some of these gay men were humorously flirting with me. We all had a good time, a few chuckles and I know that I felt flattered and nobody was hurt or offended. Today, it is one of those memories that makes me smile.

11. I never even knowingly met a gay man until I was in my twenties

and working in construction in NYC. It just wasn't part of my lifestyle as a good Catholic boy from Yonkers. Of course, since I sang in the choir and didn't serve at the altar, maybe I missed the chance to learn more about diversity than I did otherwise.

I don't particularly care about gays and I don't particularly care for gays, either. I just don't like anyone getting pushed around because they're "different" from the rest of us. And, after all, if you add up all the people who are "different" from the rest of us, there really aren't a lot of the rest of us left to count at all, are there?

Just as an example, being politically aware enough to be on this site makes me different from the "rest of us" myself. Go figure.

he just said he was around a lot of gay guys at a young age. And a fag hag is a woman (usually straight) who hangs around with guy men a lot , not a straight guy who is the object of gay infatuation. Anyway my gay friends call me a fag hag, it's a term of endearment really. But I can understand that it's probably offensive to some.

I suppose the term is usually applied to women, but I have a friend who calls me that at times, usually when I'm trying to talk him into going to this predominantly gay bar in D.C. I love to go to when I visit.
