But its tough for me to imagine a better performance. I mean, Rourke was outstanding. Best acting Ive seen in decades...it blew me away. So, its hard for me to imagine that there were two lifetime, masterfull performances in a single year, much less a single decade.

I saw Milk first and thought he had a lock on it. Then I saw The Wrestler and realized I had no clue.

My quote after I walked out: "I know Sean Penn isn't gay, but for two hours, I forgot.". Sean Penn didn't play Harvey Milk, he embodied Harvey Milk. It was the best performance I've ever seen from him and frankly one of the best I've ever seen from anyone.

Screw politics...seriously. Watching Rourke seemed like watching a documentary. He was Randy Robinson, in more ways than one. I don't care who he votes for when I consider who did the best job.

The Academy loves biographical characterizations more than fictional characterizations, so I'm not too surprised.

The description sounds like the second half of Beyond The Mat where they were following around Jake The Snake Roberts and he doesn't talk to his daughter anymore and he's using drugs and she is and he's just barely hanging on to his tiny bit of celebrity.

However much I agree with the statement, it appears that Penn was picked by Californians to make a political statement about prop8.

Milk was an incredibly fantastic movie, but it wasn't Penn's best performance. And we all know Penn will deliver plenty more Oscar-worthy performances.

"The Wrestler" on the other hand will always be remembered as Rourke's Opus Magnum, and he should have been rewarded for it, IMO.

I watched both films within a 24hr period and saw The Wrestler twice. Rourke's performance was even better the second time around. Two very different types of performance. A huge part of Rourke's performance was physical (not just the wrestling). There was much said with the body as with the dialog. It reminds me of Ledger's fabulous performance in Brokeback Mountain a few years back.

Rourke has just pissed-off too many people in Hollywood over the years.

Though Penn was good, his was just a straight-up character study (he nailed it though)...

I will probably get flamed, but I thought 'The Wrestler' was a better movie overall...

This was his once in a lifetime role. I can't see Rourke getting another shot like this. But I think all this positive press will be good for future roles.

Sean Penn was awesome as usual, but he's already won (only 5 years ago) and probably will be nominated and maybe win many more times in his magnificent career. He's not even 50 and already has 5 nominations and 2 wins, ALL in Best Lead Actor. I can easily see him winning his third Oscar in his 50s. But IMO, this win really proves how strong Penn is in the acting community. BOTH his wins came in extremely competitive years in which he had to face off against a very strong rival (Bill Murray in 2003).
