What a nightmarish hellish hateful bunch they are. They remind me of the horrible extended family my mother, thankfully, spared me ever having to be around. I'll never forget when one of them started telling her she was going to hell, and so was I, for not going to church. She said to them: "Well, I might be going to hell, but do me one last favor, will ya? When you get there, pretend you don't know me." That has been one of my favorite lines in the world ever since. she voted yes on 8 and lives in CA. She is in her 80's and those stupid commercials swayed her. All the way up to the last week she was going to vote no.

Supporting hate is and will always be a shameful thing, no matter how "popular" it is at the time.

I'm sure many of us on this board (like me) had some ancestors who owned slaves or were against giving women the vote or opposed interracial marriage or were involved in anti-labor activities or, you name the struggle, we're all related to people on the wrong side somehow....was it our fault personally? No. But are we ashamed of them being on the wrong side of the historical arc's bend towards justice, and rightfully so? Yes.

23. Yes, it's only a matter of time. People my age do not understand how anyone

can be against gay marriage. I think it has to do with the fact that gay people have always had a presence in popular culture in a way that many didn't with older generations. We have reality shows like MTV that have always shown glbt people, so even in a place like rural Montana where a kid may not personally know any glbt people, they know they are just regular people trying to live their lives like everyone else. I think I read that gay marriage is more accepted by under 30 evangelicals than it is New Deal Democrats 65 and older.

25. There is a huge generational gap. But there always is with such issues.

Penn was absolutely correct. 50 years from now... every person who opposed gay marriage will be looked at in the same way as those who opposed integration and interracial marriage.

They will be looked at for the shameful, hate filled people they are.

There is no excuse for what is going on in America today. But someday, they will make movies about this the same way they make movies about the Civil War. Someday, calling someone a queer, with a hateful intent, will be considered just as despicable a thing as calling someone the "N" word.

I remember watching TV as a kid and being so appalled when I found out how Black people had been treated in the past. I asked my mother if it was true and she told me that it was shameful. But then... then, years later, I heard my father call Obama the "N" word during the elections and it made me want to puke.

My parents, my mom especially, realize that it is wrong... and are slowly changing day by day... but they do not understand, and are in denial about how people in my generation feel. When I talk about having dated black people and a black boy I currently have a crush on... I see how they cringe. They say how they'd feel so sorry for the children in an interracial couple because kids would never accept it and would make fun of them. And I just think, "really? none of my friends would? maybe you don't realize how out of touch your generation is with what is going on in the school halls these days?"
