Recommend this thread if you support Sean Penn in the inevitable shitstorm to follow after tonight
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 12:01 AM by Seen the light
There's going to be an incredible amount of outrage from the MSM tomorrow after what Sean Penn said to the Prop 8 supporters. Recommend if you support what he said and you support equal rights for ALL!

ETA: He said he was proud to live in a country that could elect such an elegant president and had a message to Prop 8 supporters that he hopes they wallow in shame one day when they have to explain their vote to their grandchildren. Something like that, don't have the exact quote.

52. Absolutely....SCREW the MSM...
I personally have moved on from them...my wife still watches the sunday AM diatribes.
But they are so irrelevant to my life now(the msm's) that I feel free and at peace in
my own mind. Thank you, all of you, for voting sanity and reason back into our lives.

63. They're not as mainstream as perceived
As more people choose other sources of information, the corporate news loses power. They still influence far too many people, but their power is ebbing, witness the downturn in printed media.
Toward the downfall of the Soviet Union the people realized their news sources were official government propaganda organs and treated them with derision. It's now happening here.
The Clinton witch hunts of the 90s and silence during the Bush cartel's crimes against humanity and our constitution proved that the Fourth Estate has become a fifth column.
Once the public loses faith the fall is soon to follow.

104. Tell your wife she should watch "Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood."
Always really good stories and interviews ... and my stress level and blood pressure went down immediately when I switched from the roundtable circle jerks to Osgood.

If anything "big" happens on "Meet the Press," you can find it on the newswires later.

You commie, homo-loving sons of guns.

I did not expect this, but I, and I want to be very clear that I know how hard I make it to appreciate me often, but, I am touched by the appreciation and I hoped for it enough that I did want to scribble down so I had the names, in case you were commie, homo-loving sons of guns...

I want to thank my best friend, Satsuma Suzawa, my circle of long-time support, Mara, Brian, Barry and Bob, the great Cleve Jones, our wonderful writer Lance Black, producers Bruce Cohen and Dan Jinks, and particularly, as all us actors know, our director either has the patience, talent and restraint to grant us a voice or they don't, and it goes from the beginning, the meeting, through the cutting room, and there is no finer hands to be in than Gus Van Sant.

Finally - two last finallys - for those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, and, I think it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support - we've got to have equal rights for everyone.

And there are these last two things: I'm very very proud to live in a country that is willing to elect an elegant man President, and a country who, for all its toughness, creates courageous artists, and this is in great due respect to all the nominees, who despite a sensitivity that sometimes has brought enormous challenges - Mickey Rourke rises again, and he is my brother.

I tuned in for a few minutes last night specifically to see Sean Penn and find

some reaction to the film -- we tuned out after 3 minutes.

The reaction Penn reports is very disappointing and I hope that soon more people

will be turning their backs on churches who continue to preach intolerance and

hatred for homosexuals! After that, perhaps we can get into patriarchal religion's

hatred and intolerance for females!

Thanks again --

Someone has now also posted a video of it -- even more moving!!

67. I had almost given up hope that he'd get the Oscar, but I thought
that the actors who voted for him didn't want to miss this opportunity for him to win for his marvelous work in "Milk." It was a stunning performance. Also, I think the actors wanted to make a statement about Prop 8. Lastly, I thought that maybe the actors really didn't appreciate being told that Mickey Rourke had the whole thing sewed up. A little push back...I'm so glad.

140. Some of Depp's performances have been jarring
like his Irish Traveler role in "Chocolat." In addition, he's gotten sidetracked into cartoonish roles. His early promise failed to pay off because he's taken the easy road.

Penn's performances have all been seamless, challenging, and 100% believable.

Do they even watch the Oscars? Don't they hate the Hollywood liberals and their ilk...especially after so many donated to Obama?
I don't get that many of them are fans of cinema, art or indie films--especially when the big winner of the night was a film featuring little brown children of Mumbai.

Tom Hanks spoke out against the LDS and what they did regarding prop8 as one of the producers of "Big Love."

I absolutely support Penn, what he said, his politics, etc.--have for years. But I don't think those low brow, uncultured, bigoted cretins would bother watching the show, but that's just me.

Honestly, I can't listen to or watch their hate speech masquerading as news. I didn't figure them to be film fans (or interested in the goings on of Hollywood). But I guess it makes some sense (in a sick way) that they would have an obsession with all the things (and people) they hate.

I'm guessing it's kind of a Darkside, Sith Lord obsession with the Jedi Knights and Rebel forces thing they've got going on. It's cool, I understand--still licking their wounds from seeing their dark prince lose his throne. Bless their pathetic, hateful little hearts.

28. Here's a blog entry from L.A. Times
8:46 p.m. — Past winners Adrien Brody ("The Pianist"), Michael Douglas ("Wall Street"), Anthony Hopkins ("The Silence of the Lambs"), Ben Kingsley ("Gandhi"), and Robert DeNiro ("Raging Bull") presented lead actor to Sean Penn ("Milk"). Penn was greeted by a standing ovation. And surprise, surprise, he opened with a couple of jokes! He then pulled out a list and thanked his best friend, his circle of support, the film's writer, producers, and in a touching moment, the film's director Gus Van Sant. He ended on a political note, chastizing those who voted for the ban against gay marriage in California and saluting the election of an elegant man as president. And at the last, he called Mickey Rourke his brother.

...in general who is passionate in the causes he supports and I'm glad he gets involved politically as he does. He does a lot of good in the world and is very talented. He absolutely deserves the awards he's gotten.

All that said though, I'd NOT want to have to deal with him on a personal level. He strikes me as hot-tempered and very difficult to deal with in personal relationships - and like you say, self-absorbed. I like him a lot as an actor and political activist - but I bet he's a pain in the royal ass to deal with in personal relationships! Yech! Not surprised he has a rocky marriage. Not at all.

Edit: I googled Robin Wright Penn and you're right - she has quite the career herself! And of course I found all the muck about their filing for divorce and that he's fooling around and blah blah blah - the usual gossip. I don't care much about that. It did annoy me that on one site, they listed all her movie credits over the years and for "executive summary" all they put was "Sean Penn's Wife". Jeeze. The woman is one hell of a LOT MORE than just Sean Penn's wife. Puh. :puke:

A good person would be better to his wife and family, rather than needing to feel like he looks better by sponsoring charities (AKA- playing the KISA role).

Don't get me wrong. Penn's efforts to call attention to various charities (esp. towards New Orleans post Katrina) were quite admirable. But I think it's his way of illustrating he's not a bad person publicly, all the while treating his family like crap, was an ego driven attempt to feel better about himself after the fact...

BTW, did anyone notice how he never ONCE made eye contact with his wife throughout the Oscar broadcast (despite her constant contact and seemingly loving support)? He's totally cheating on her yet again... Not *one* word of thanks to her or their family for putting up with his need to work on the role of portraying Harvey Milk. That to me, is quite telling to his persona...

...gotta wonder about a man who takes his family for granted. He also never mentioned - HARVEY MILK - during his acceptance speech - wonderful a speech as it was. Seems to have been a couple glaring ommissions there.

90. MSNBC just did a little bit about how he didn't thank her. The reporter
confronted him about it at the after-party. He reported that she said "it was designed that
way (not to thank her} because he had so much to say."

The reporter was funny. He said he didn't buy it. You can say "Thanks, I love you." in
2 seconds.

Wow, sounds like she REALLY must be crazy about him - to cover him like that.

Now really, does anyone believe a wife would say - oh, please don't waste 2 seconds to thank me ?

108. They're still in the process of reconciling their marriage ... she had actually file for divorce,
but then withdrew the filing ... they're still working things out apparently (maybe for the sake of their kids?).

So, who knows (and who cares) what goes on in the Wright-Penn household?

Robin Wright deserves an Oscar one of these days ... she ROCKS as an actress. Some of her Indie work has been beyond fabulous.

Check out "Nine Lives" and "Home at the End of the World" for starters.

And Princess Bride? PLEASE!

110. Yes she is though I don't recall what I've seen her in . . . but did notice . . .
that he didn't thank her -- and was wondering if she is pregnant or if

it was just the dress that made it look that way?

Doubly odd if he didn't mention a coming event . . . ?

But -- glad he won for THIS movie --

Btw, which one got "best movie"?

94. My take on it was that he would have been hard pressed
to remember her name.

I was a bit surprised to see how reliant he was on his little list of people to thank - it seemed to me he could barely pronounce his best friend's name as he read it. (Of course, if he intended to thank her he could have written her name on his little list as well.)

Don't get me wrong - there are certainly some of his works in which I think he was a brilliant actor (I haven't seen Milk yet - so I can't comment on that particular bit of acting), and am elated with his anti-discrimination comments he made last night - I just wondered if he had a hard time with stage fright when he's not acting (so much so that I googled to see if I could find out if it was a long standing issue).

And there were hate demonstrators outside the theatre which he mentioned in his speech.

I agree that they should wallow in shame someday for what they have done to the gay community.

134. Shitstorm will be more than just Sean Penn. ABC twice aired him & John Franco kissing
and if I recall that first kiss (quite the passionate one) was aired pretty early in the show too.

I mean ABC can play off the two acceptance speeches as not their doing but they put those kisses in the show and I'm sure the fundies will not be happy about that.

As for me, I was watching that 'great romances of 2008' montage with scenes from a few really crappy movies from 2008. And I was thinking ABC was going to wimp out and not include Penn/Franco's romance from "Milk". And sure enough there was the very passionate kiss.

Good job ABC
