1. Why do Catholics say they are giving up meat and then eat animals?
Just because they live(d) in the water? Makes no sense.

3. Something about not eating flesh on Friday...
as in eating Jesus' body on (Good) Friday, so they eat fish.

Either that or someone way back owned a fishmonger's shop and had pull with the Vatican.

14. It's a form of penance, on Fridays outside of Lent US Catholics can choose
a penitential act of our own choosing. During Lent the rule is no meat or fowl. I'm sure at sometime in the past it was no food. I've done nothing but water the whole day before. Fasting is on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one small meal and up to two smaller that aren't together bigger than the big meal.

Depending on who you ask it's either because people aren't willing to suffer or make sacrifices for their beliefs or that the church wants to make it easier for all to participate and fulfill our obligation. Even providing charitable acts on Fridays is acceptable in the US.

And of course a personal penance during lent. You hear people naming what vices they are giving up for lent, easiest one is to add to the fasting or abstinence, either by days or what isn't eaten.

20. I have Methodist relatives who follow the idea of sacrificing something
for Lent. Something about my cousin did without her Nintendo (back in the day) for 40 days and I got lambasted to asking her mother to let me borrow it for 39 of those days. :hide:

16. Since Friday was always the goddess sacred day of the week...
It's most likely the fish meal had to do with her worship. One of Aphrodite's appurtenances, traditionally, for instance, was the net.

9. No they aren't edible for Fridays during lent

Abstinence The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Moral theologians have traditionally considered this also to forbid soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.

making us more conscious of the special period of Lent by making some kind of personal sacrifice during that time, and for most of us non-vegetarians, "giving up" meat and poultry is something of a sacrifice. To me, as to many Christians, the details aren't that important. It's the awareness of making a change. Some people instead of -- or in addition to -- giving up something, decide to DO something, like working at a foodbank.

22. They classified rabbit fetuses (or newborns) as fish, and ate them, too
Indeed, the wild rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus of southern Europe and North Africa is thought to have been discovered by Phoenicians when they reached the shores of Spain about 1000 BC. In Roman times the rabbit was still emblematic of Spain. The Romans apparently spread the rabbit throughout the Roman Empire as a game animal. Like the Spaniards of that time, they ate foetuses or newborn rabbits, which they called laurices.

Rabbits had still not been domesticated, but Varron (116 to 27 BC) suggested that rabbits be kept in leporaria, stone-walled pens or parks, with hares and other wild species for hunting. These leporaria were the origin of the warrens or game parks that subsequently developed in the Middle Ages. It is known that monks were in the habit of eating laurices during Lent as they were considered "an aquatic dish" (sic). In France, it became the sole right of the lord of the manor to keep warrens. Rabbits were hunted little, and were captured with snares, nooses or nets.

Hairless, you see. Hare-less would be another matter.

we like to talk about things we can argue about. Fish is PERFECT to argue about. It's the DU way. :toast:

Besides, if you let them go at it for a while in this thread ( )

you just might find the perfect snarky comment for the lawyer. <---- I wish we had a Groucho Marx type of smiley for a humorous comment.
