Colbert is brilliant: re MoveOn lawsuit/his new video editing challenge
Video editing challenge post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x511185

Colbert just talked to an attorney from EFF representing MoveOn in their lawsuit against Viacom for yanking their video, using clips from Colbert off of youtube. Then it hit me, Colbert just issued a video editing challenge earlier in the show and said it was because of Rahm said he edits videos.

I thought the earlier piece with Ifill was hysterical but when you add in the EFF lawyer and the MoveOn lawsuit it all makes a nice little package. Or maybe it is just me.

1. I may have missed something
I will say the editing challenge interview was hysterical - there were so many obvious things in there...but I maybe didn't understand the MoveOn guy part - in fact the interview seemed odd to me.

Last week, Jon Stewart basically said he thought having the videos on YouTube was a win/win - promotion for the shows, and traffic for YouTube. I would guess that Stephen feels the same, but don't know for sure.

Maybe you can explain what you mean? It could easily have gone over my head, and I KNOW Colbert is brilliant.

2. Well Colbert is inviting people to "steal" his content and mash it up
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 12:06 AM by kenny blankenship
his image will be re-edited, rearranged and reconstituted by un-authorized video editors appropriating his show and republishing it on the internet(s). So while he appeared to take his "owner's" side, namely the side or legal position of Viacom, in talking to Barlow, and protesting the idea that people should be able republish and reedit his performance (and make money for youtube) without being punished for copyright violation, his actions in the earlier segment speak a bit louder than his words.

3. oKAY! Thank YOU!
NOW I get it! That WAS pretty brilliant. And by giving his permission, they are not really unauthorized, either. He's so damn sneaky!

I so wish the clips hadn't been removed from YouTube - I was a latecomer to both TDS and TCR - it was not until the Correspondents dinner that I became addicted, and I was catching up on all that I'd missed until the clips were removed.

5. He also pretended not to understand the concept of satire or parody
In addition to the beautiful explanation that kenny blankenship gave, Colbert did the earlier bit knowing full well that the clips he was providing for people to use (and misuse) would be used to both satirize and parody him and his show. Moreover, he knows that some of the entries to his "edit the video clips" will probably end up being posted on youtube.com. It's great. It works on so many levels.

6. I think you're right
And for him to keep a straight face while saying he had no idea what satire or parody were couldn't have been easy. It does work on many levels - he really never ceases to amaze me - he's always got something up his sleeve.

7. it was wonderful -- the character he plays on TV wouldn't understand satire
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 08:33 PM by Lisa
How it works, or why it is necessary.
But Colbert himself does, of course!

By the way, I am constantly amazed by how he manages to make that character appealing -- even though there are so many reasons why I should be turned off by him (wilfully ignorant, egotistical, etc.). He really is a brilliant actor, being able to pull that off.

8. I agree - I read that when they were creating the show
he had some problems with the character, because he didn't want to be perceived as an "asshole", but Jon Stewart told him his inherent goodness would show through, and it does, I think. I don't think many people could pull it off, but he does, brilliantly.

9. It is nothing short of brilliant
I am so awed by the writing of the show and the way that Colbert is able to pull it off so well. There really is no other word that I can think of to describe Colbert's show and Colbert himself then brilliant.

fwiw, when the show first came on my husband was convinced that Colbert wouldn't be able to pull it off for very long. I've never been so happy that my hubby was wrong.

10. he's great
i'm really impressed that he's so good at what he does. it suprises me that so many conservatives still don't get it and continue to go on his show only to get their asses whooped.
