People have to stop buying into the language "entitlement"
SS is not an entitlement and this is how it's being framed. When it is taken out of your paycheck it is your money not what they want to call an entitlement.

Yes you are entitled to get the money you put into it because it is your money. When Reagan doubled the amount taken out we paid for ours and our parents so just leave it the hell alone.

It was never intended to be used for anything other than retirement and yet they keep digging into it and we don't get interest added on to what we put in.

How about digging into billions stolen by the banks and wall street instead of bailing them out? That's the real issue here. These people are the true criminals and they all know it as does Obama and yet they want to focus on SS and call it an entitlement .

All the yeas I paid taxes an I am against war and I had no say in where the money went but if i had it sure the hell would not have been into wars or paying the politicians healthcare which most of us don't even have and these people make the laws and they work for us and they make the laws in their own favor and people actually admire some of these politicians as some sort of stars.

1. No, "entitlement" shouldn't be a dirty word.
Social Security is a benefit to which american workers are entitled by virtue of having paid for it.

2. It actually IS an entitlement. You are entitled to it because you have earned it.
Now, have ALL members of Congress, no matter how short a term, earned FULL LIFETIME free medical care? NO! That's WELFARE.

Good post you made!

FDR: Blues90 'gets' it!
ER: Indeed he/she does. Such a breath of fresh air!

4. $106,800
is the maximum amount of income that can be taxed for SS. I can think of an easy way to fix it but it would piss off a lot of people who wouldn't really miss the 6.2%

6. and for 2008 it was $102,000.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 02:03 PM by DesertFlower
it goes up every year. i think continuing the deduction for people who make a lot of money has been discussed by obama. the medicare deduction has no maximum.

my husband makes $140,000 a year. we look forward every year to having that FICA deduction stop. right now he's paying $714.00 a month. that's almost our mortgage payment.
