What are your opinions on dress codes for clubs?

There has been a recent discussion about the dress codes in an entertainment area in Kansas City. The argument is that the dress code is too strict and their has been arguments about loosening it. What are people's opinions of dress codes in general? I have been a bouncer, I am quite aware of the importance of maintaining a dress code in order to maintain peace, but I know others disagree.

What do you think?

1. A private club should be able to have whatever dress code they want.

It wasn't that long ago many restaurants required jackets and ties and had spares for those without.

What if the club in question was part of a TIF project? i.e A project that was partially tax payer funded?

6. I assume the club leases space from the city... if so then no problem.

If the city itself is the manager of the club well I still think a dress code is in order but why is the city running a club?

No shirt, a shirt with profanity, a t-shirt, business casual... these are all types of attire that might not fit in well depending on where you are. :shrug:

Most of the real monied folks I've met in my lifetime wouldn't be caught DEAD in a club shallow enough to enforce a dress code.

Clubs I worked at closed down because of a lack of dress code. It doesn't take long to lose a liquor license when you have several shooting outside from club goers.

13. Step by step process....

1. Club opens in an area that is vibrant but near higher crime areas.
2. Club decides to not have a very strict dress code.
3. Club allows people with "thuggish" attire into the club.
4. People with said attire get into a fight in the club.
5. People with said attire are kicked out of club.
6. People with said attire go to their cars to get a gun.
7. People with said attire start shooting.

Why not just put up a sign, "Whites Only" or "No Punks or Gang Members Allowed"?

Most people I know with real money (a lot of it old money) wouldn't be caught dead in a place that didn't have some sort of dress code.
As one of my friends often says, "If you're worth a million dollars then for God's sake dress like it."

They have a guest list. If the bouncer doesn't think you should enter you aren't on the list.

If it's a private business the owner can do whatever he wants, dress code, or not. But I am sure a dress code will hurt business, so if I owned the club I would not have a dress code.

I dont believe in dress codes, unless it's at work, and you work in an office, or in retail, etc. I used to go to a club that had a policy of no hats, but so many people tried to go in with hats they got rid of that policy because it cost them a lot of business.

So the owner could have a dress code, but it will probably hurt business, and is he not in business to make money, so I would think there should not be a dress code.
